...say multiplex owners who are considering shutting their doors from May 1

The on-going tussle between the Untied Producer-Distributor Forum and the multiplexes just got worse.

When the producers went on strike and decided against releasing their films in multiplexes, they expected the multiplex owners to bow down to their demands. However the opposite has happened.

The Multiplexes Committee Association is now planning to go on strike, too, from May 1!

It appears that there is no solution in sight with the two warring sides unable to reach a compromise anytime soon.

The multiplexes never expected the producers to put a ban against releasing their films in their theatres. As a result they have been suffering heavy losses.

Says an insider, "According to some figures the all-India multiplexes showed a mere four per cent collection past Friday.

Apparently the multiplexes are losing close to Rs 3 crore every day nationwide as they don't have new films to screen.

Six top multiplexes had a closed-door meeting late Thursday night and it was decided that they, too, go on strike from May 1.

But all the members are not in favouru00a0 downing shutters. At least three of the six multiplexes don't want to go ahead with shutting their multiplexes."

Ramesh Sippy, spokesperson for the Untied Producer-Distributor Forum says, "If they are going on a strike, it's fantastic. We are not on strike; we have simply suspended our releases.

Right now they have closed two out of their six screens in each multiplex but I think it has all got to do with cost-cutting and nothing else."

When quizzed how whether shutting shop will affect talks, he says, "I don't think they are planning to shut down and the possibility of further dialogue between us can't be ruled out.

We have expressed our thoughts and now the ball is in their court to come back with a proposal of some sort."u00a0
