In a recent interview, his ex-wife Rita recalled how she was tortured during her pregnancy and dragged to court by Sanu and his family. She even shared how she was not given proper food.

In an interview with Film Window, she shared, “He is a great singer, but as a human being, it would be best to talk about him as little as possible. He was never ambitious. It was my dream to make him a singer; I pushed him. I helped Kumar Sanu become Kumar Sanu. After Aashiqui’s success, he started earning a lot of money, and that’s when he started changing. He became ill-mannered; he was never like that.”
Recalling the torture, she said, “I never stepped out of the house. I wasn’t allowed. I wasn’t allowed to go to the parlour or get waxed. Sanu took me to court on the basis of cruelty during my pregnancy. He even had an affair during that time, which has come out today. And he dragged me to court? I was very young at that time; I felt like my whole world had crushed, and my family was shocked. He did such a huge party a year ago, saying I was the reason behind his success."
“They went out once and locked the kitchen storage. I sent the watchman, got one kg of rice, and then cooked food for myself. They tortured me while I was pregnant; I couldn’t do anything. They even stopped getting milk for my children and told the pediatrician they wouldn’t pay. It would be wrong to call them human beings,” she alleged.
Rita shared how Kumar Sanu would make fun of her in court, often accompanied by the same people. "When I was pregnant with Jaan, I was not even fed properly and felt sick all the time,” she revealed.

The couple got divorced in 1994 because of Sanu’s affair with Kunickaa Sadanand. Sanu later tied the knot with Bikaner girl Saloni Bhattacharya, whose part of the family lived in London. The happy couple was blessed with two daughters, Shannon and Ana.
