Even though the industry has come out in support of Padmavati amidst the ongoing controversy, it is filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali who has attracted immense wrath from certain groups. Cast member Shahid Kapoor tells mid-day that Bhansali has safeguarded his leading actors against the furor over the release of the film. "He is at the forefront [of the controversy]. It has been tough for Bhansali. He is the one who has to primarily deal with the controversy, because the film is his interpretation [of history]. Even though we [cast members Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and he] are the faces of the film, Bhansali's vision is being questioned."

Talking to mid-day about the limited conversation he has with Singh and Padukone about the controversy, Kapoor says, "The funniest part is, we have all been too busy doing different things. Even though we've bumped into each other at social gatherings, we haven't discussed the matter." That promotion has been suspended has further limited their interaction. "If we were meeting regularly, it would have been different," he says, alluding to the trio taking decisive steps.

Yet, Kapoor is certain that when the film hits screens, it will be received well. "The film is phenomenal, and people will eventually view it for what it is. It's becoming a game of patience. That the film is not being viewed is not right. It needs to be shown to people; opinions must be made after viewing it."

While Padukone has taken a hiatus from work to ensure she is mentally prepared for her next, Kapoor says he is "raring" to kick-off his upcoming project. "With an experience of 15 years in the industry, I have braved different scenarios," he says. Referring to the controversy surrounding the release of his 2016 drugs-drama, Udta Punjab, which was caught in a tussle with the Censor Board, he says, "I have seen what transpired with that film. Eventually, it released and it is among the most celebrated films of 2016. So, I am looking forward to future projects." The actor will start filming Batti Gul Meter Chalu soon.
