He has made no secret of his past issues with alcohol but now Phil Collins has revealed the shocking details behind his addiction.

The singer – who shocked fans with his frail appearance – admitted that at one stage he would start boozing at eleven in the morning, cracking open a bottle of wine before moving on to vodka.

In an interview with The Times, he admitted he turned to drink when he retired and his family moved away.

“There was a massive hole in my life, which I filled with a lot of drinking,” he admitted.

“At eleven in the morning I would put the television on, watch the cricket, and open a bottle of wine. And then I would drink vodka, and that doesn’t agree with your pancreas.”

Things got so bad that when one doctor saw him they asked, "Has Mr Collins got his papers in order?"

Phil Collins cracks a smile after sparking concern over his gaunt appearance earlier in the week.

It wasn’t until he reached rock bottom though that he turned his life around.

He added: “With the drinking I saw that my kids got worried. I was taking pills for one thing or another, then I’d fall down the stairs. Now I’ve given up and family life is so much better.”

Phil had sparked concern when he was seen hobbling with a walking stick to radio interviews.

The 64-year-old star, who was forced to delay a musical comeback due to back surgery in 2015, also broke a bone in his foot before Christmas.

Despite his issues, his rep insisted he is recovering well from his health battles and is expected to make a "100 per cent recovery".
