Tom Hanks to play Abraham Lincoln in adaptation of Lincoln in the Bardo

The Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks is set to portray the former President Abraham Lincoln in the upcoming film adaptation of Lincoln in the Bardo from Starburns Industries. The actor will also produce the project, based on George Saunders’ bestselling novel, through his Playtone label with partner Gary Goetzman, reports ‘Variety’. George Saunders is adapting the novel, with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Duke Johnson set to direct and produce. As per ‘Variety’, this is far from Hanks’ first time portraying a real-life figure, with his filmography ranging from astronaut Jim Lovell to hero pilot Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, as well as Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee, Fred Rodgers and Walt Disney, but it is the actor’s first time portraying a U.S. President. While President Lincoln’s life, leading the country through the Civil War and abolishing slavery, as in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, for which Daniel Day-Lewis won the best actor Oscar, and his 1865 assassination are more often explored in cinema and other forms of media. Lincoln in the Bardo centers on Abraham Lincoln’s relationship with his recently deceased 11-year-old son. To capture one of the most intimate aspects of the politician's life, the production will blend stop-motion animation and live-action to explore “themes of love, empathy and human capacity in the face of unimaginable grief” via an ensemble of characters, “both living and dead, historical and invented”. Johnson, Paul Young and Devon Young Rabinowitz are producing for Starburns Industries, with the project as the first to go into production since the studio announced its film fund. Steven Shareshian, Aaron Mitchell and Saunders will serve as executive producers. Production will take place in London. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. BAFTA apologises to Michael B Jordan, Delroy Lindo for racial slur

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts and BBC have apologised after a racial slur was heard during the BAFTA Awards broadcast. The remark was made by Tourette’s activist John Davidson when Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting the award for Best Visual Effects during Sunday’s ceremony. It sparked criticism, with authorities clarifying how a person with Tourette syndrome can have involuntary tics. BAFTA and BBC apologise for racial slur during ceremony The incident prompted the British Academy of Film and Television Arts to apologise for “offensive language that carries incomparable trauma and pain for so many,” adding, “We would like to thank Michael and Delroy for their incredible dignity and professionalism.” The note continued, “One of our guests, John Davidson MBE, has Tourette syndrome and has devoted his life to educating and campaigning for better understanding of this condition. Tourette syndrome causes involuntary verbal tics that the individual has no control over. Such tics are in no way a reflection of an individual’s beliefs and are not intentional. John Davidson is an executive producer of the BAFTA-nominated film I Swear, which is based on his life experience.” The epithet could be heard when the BBC broadcast the ceremony about two hours after the live event. The broadcaster apologised for not editing it out before the broadcast, though the offensive word could still be heard on its iPlayer streaming service on Monday morning. The programme was later removed, and the BBC said the slur would be edited out. About Davidson’s controversial remark The awards ceremony witnessed an unexpected disruption when Tourette’s activist John Davidson shouted a racist slur (the N-word) while actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting on stage, sparking controversy online. Michael and Delroy were taken aback by the act; however, they maintained dignity and went ahead with the ceremony. Host Alan Cumming apologised to the audience. John Davidson is known for speaking openly about living with Tourette syndrome. He has worked for years to raise awareness and support others with the condition. In 2018, he received an honour from Queen Elizabeth II for his efforts. He was also featured in the 1989 documentary John’s Not Mad, according to Deadline. Davidson’s life is depicted in the film I Swear, where he is played by Robert Aramayo. While accepting the Rising Star award, Aramayo called Davidson “the most remarkable man I’ve ever met.”

Zootopia 2 co-creator Jared Bush and producer Yvett Merino accepted the award while expressing their gratitude to the production, especially Walt Disney Animation Studios and their cast. Jared Bush, while accepting the honour, got emotional and talked about the message which they wanted to spread through their storytelling in Zootopia 2, "We wanted to tell the story about differences and the fact that sometimes in this world right now, we are told that differences are bad or a problem.
