Actor Milly Alcock has spoken candidly about the criticism she anticipates ahead of her upcoming superhero film Supergirl, stating that she has learned to navigate intense public scrutiny following her experience on House of the Dragon, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Alcock, who plays Kara Zor-El in the forthcoming DC Universe film slated for release on June 26, reflected on the challenges of being a woman leading a major franchise. Drawing from her time on the Game of Thrones prequel, the actor said she has become more aware of how women are perceived and discussed in the public sphere.
"It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on," Alcock recently said of what she learned from working on the Game of Thrones prequel series. "We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women's bodies. I can't really stop them. I can only be myself."
The actor, who also featured in Sirens, had earlier opened up about her relationship with social media and online commentary, revealing that she consciously avoids engaging with discourse around her work.
"It just makes me incredibly anxious," she told Nylon in 2022. "Me seeing my face constantly is straining. No one should have to do that. It fuckin' sucks, man. I don't know how the socialites of the world can do that. It's kind of driving me off the wall. It's an incredibly difficult space to navigate," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
During the same interaction, Alcock also weighed in on the long-standing criticism of superhero films by acclaimed filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott. Scorsese had previously remarked that such films are "not cinema" and likened them to "theme parks," while Scott described them as "boring...," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Responding to the criticism, Alcock said, "I get it. They've been around for fucking ever making phenomenal films. ... Not every film is for everyone. The beauty of art is that you can be selective," according to The Hollywood Reporter. (ANI)
