Rajinikanth’s Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has already crossed Rs 50 crore in worldwide advance sales, four days ahead of its August 14 release, with strong numbers from both Indian and international markets
Still from Coolie
Coolie will be released in theatres on August 14, marking Rajinikanth’s first collaboration with filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj, one of the most sought-after storytellers in Tamil cinema today. Naturally, excitement is high, and the proof lies in the film’s staggering advance collections. The makers began advance sales by opening bookings in international markets before moving to India. The film will release worldwide in Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada. According to a Hindustan Times report, global sales have already crossed an astounding Rs 50 crore, four days before release.
Coolie races ahead in I-Day clash
In India, bookings for Coolie began on Friday in a staggered manner. The film has already earned Rs 14 crore domestically, with nearly Rs 10 crore from opening-day sales. The Tamil version leads with close to Rs 10 crore, while the dubbed Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi versions are expected to gain momentum in the coming days.
In international markets, North America has already touched USD 1.7 million (approximately Rs 14 crore), with USD 1.45 million coming from the USA alone, where over 56,000 tickets have been sold.
The Coolie vs War 2 clash
The Tamil film has generated massive buzz owing to the Lokesh Kanagaraj–Rajinikanth pairing. The cast also includes Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna, and Upendra. Recently, rumours suggested Aamir Khan was involved in Coolie’s distribution to give it an edge over War 2 in northern India. However, his team dismissed the reports, clarifying that his cameo was purely out of goodwill and respect for the makers.
A spokesperson for Aamir Khan Productions stated,“Neither Aamir Khan nor anyone from his team is involved in the distribution of Coolie. Mr. Khan has not made any calls to any exhibitor or distributor. His cameo in the film is purely a gesture of his bond with director Lokesh Kanagaraj and Rajinikanth. Everyone at AKP, especially Aamir Khan, is thrilled with the success of Sitaare Zameen Par’s YouTube release and is overjoyed with the response it has received.”
Both films, Coolie and War 2, are set to release on August 14, coinciding with Independence Day. While War 2 is part of YRF’s spy universe and will introduce Jr NTR and Kiara Advani, Coolie is riding high on Lokesh Kanagaraj’s stellar track record.
