Jitendra Kumar, known for slice-of-life hits, explores thrillers with Zee5’s Bhagwat. Ahead of exploring the new genre, the actor admits he got nervous and claims he is not breaking from his boy-next-door image, rather he is widening his range

Internet’s favourite, Jeetu Bhaiya, is in the mood for a change. After a spate of slice-of-life shows like TVF Pitchers, Kota Factory, and Panchayat, actor Jitendra Kumar is trading the genre for his first suspense film, Bhagwat. The decision was motivated by a simple feeling — he knew it was time he did something that wasn’t expected of him. “People have mostly seen me in roles that are warm and relatable. So, stepping into a genre that relies on tension and unpredictability was exciting,” he tells mid-day.
For Kumar, the Zee5 crime thriller was about taking a leap into the unknown and emerging richer as an artiste. “It was about discovering a new kind of energy, one that is more intense and internal,” he shares. The actor was admittedly nervous before the unit shot the thriller in Uttar Pradesh. “There were nerves. That’s a good sign because it means I care about what I’m doing,” he smiles.
So, is Bhagwat the actor’s way of breaking away from the image he has created over the years? He views it differently. “I wouldn’t call it breaking away from the image, I would call it expanding. I love slice-of-life stories and will continue to do them. But I also want to keep showing the audience the different shades of what I can do.”
And he can’t think of a better way to showcase his range as a performer than through Akshay Shere’s directorial venture. Describing the script as a “page turner”, Kumar adds, “Right from the first few pages, I was hooked. The story has that rare quality where you’re constantly guessing what’s going to happen next.”
