09 June,2025 12:19 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentFilmmaker Anurag Kashyap has slammed Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos’ comment about launching Sacred Games as Netflix India’s first original series. Sacred Games was the first Indian original series ever produced by Netflix. The series, based on the book of the same name by Vikram Chandra, was directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. It starred Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Anurag Kashyap calls Netflix CEO 'dumb' Recently, Sarandos stated that the show was not the ideal way to enter the Indian market. Kashyap reacted strongly to Sarandos’ statement and didn’t mince his words while sharing his opinion. He shared a screenshot of an article referencing Sarandos' comment and wrote, “He should have started with Saas-Bahu… he would have done well. Which he is doing now. I always knew the tech guys are dumb when it comes to storytelling, but @tedsarandos is the definition of dumb — that I didn’t know. Good to discover that. This explains everything now.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Anurag Kashyap (@anuragkashyap10) What Ted Sarandos said In an appearance on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast, Sarandos said that it is difficult to crack into the Indian market, as people in the country are suspicious of subscriptions. Talking about not being able to tap much into the Indian market, he said, “It took us a couple of years to get the product-market fit right. Our very first Indian original show was Sacred Games. And I thought, ‘This is going to be great. People in India love movies. This is a TV show that feels as big as a movie — it has movie stars.’ What’s interesting about it is that it was very, very novel. But what I didn’t understand was that we were introducing a brand new kind of entertainment in a country the size of India.” He continued, “For me, if I did it all over again, would I have done Sacred Games a couple of years later and done things that were more populist instead? Maybe. But we knew that India was going to be a slower journey to get to where we wanted to be. But it’s a great prize at the end of the day. The addressable market is growing in the next couple of years in India, so it’s exciting.” Sacred Games was cancelled after two seasons on the platform.

07 June,2025 05:21 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentEven after Surveen Chawla wrapped up Rana Naidu’s first season over two years ago, she couldn’t shed her character of Naina Naidu. That’s why returning to the set for the series’ second season felt like homecoming to her. “While you’re doing a part, there is a residual to it, and you know there will be a second season. So, subconsciously, you don’t leave the character. I didn’t ever leave Naina. I knew her arc was incomplete. So, I left it open-ended,” says Chawla, who is joined by Venkatesh Daggubati, Rana Daggubati, and Arjun Rampal in the Netflix series. Lately, a discourse around the industry’s stance on new mothers has emerged in the wake of the Deepika Padukone and Sandeep Reddy Vanga fallout. The two, who were to collaborate on Spirit, had a disagreement when Padukone reportedly wanted an eight-hour shift, among several demands, as she was a new mother. When we ask Chawla, who welcomed parenthood in 2019, about her experience in the industry, she says, “I speak only for myself. I did a Netflix show soon after I became a mom, and I had all the support. I know there is a lot at stake. Beyond a point, I’m sure I cannot be accommodated for. But at that time, I got a lot of flexibility from my makers and the platform. If somebody really wants to cast you, they will accommodate [your needs]. And if it doesn’t fit your demands, then you have to be okay with it. You need to prioritise [your needs]. You have to be pragmatic and not expect the world to bow down at your feet.”

04 June,2025 12:11 PM IST | Mumbai | ANIWhat’s Hansal Mehta’s next after Gandhi, said to be his most ambitious work to date? Murmurs over the past few months suggested that in a departure from his penchant for real-life stories, the filmmaker was set to explore a business drama (New show on the cards, Feb 21). Now, mid-day has learnt that Mehta is ready to take the web series on floors in Sri Lanka this month. The Netflix offering, starring Anil Kapoor and Vijay Varma, tells the story of power, money, and morals through two business rivals whose ugly clash sends shockwaves in the financial world. Raima Sen and Neha Dhupia also feature in the Netflix series, for which Hansal Mehta has roped in an eclectic ensemble cast Last month, Mehta apparently headed to Sri Lanka for a recce for the big-budget drama that is produced by Vikram Malhotra. A source reveals, “Hansal and Vikram are keeping everything under wraps. With Anil and Vijay playing high-flying business magnates, the series will be shot across Mumbai, Sri Lanka, Serbia, and Georgia. The series — written by Niren Bhatt, Ankur Pathak, and Nikhil Nair — is an incisive look at the cut-throat nature of today’s financial world, where money, manipulation, and greed are part of the game. Anil and Vijay’s characters, though ruthless in their individual pursuit of power and wealth, are shown to have contrasting ideologies and work ethics. That sets the stage for a showdown, and the story follows how they take on each other. If things go as planned, it will be shot in a straight schedule from June to September.” Hansal Mehta and Vikram Malhotra Joining the male leads in the drama are Neha Dhupia and Raima Sen. “Hansal is bringing together an eclectic ensemble cast. Neha and Raima portray strong women who wield power in their own way and exert influence in the big boys’ club,” adds the source. From Shahid (2012) to Aligarh (2015), from Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story (2020) to Scoop (2023), Mehta has created an enviable filmography based on true stories. However, the source says that this time, the creator-director has built a fictional world, one set in a field rarely seen on Indian screens. “While the West has had sterling business dramas, Indian OTT entertainment hasn’t quite explored the genre. Hansal and Vikram wanted to tap into the genre by weaving a tale of ambition and betrayal.” mid-day reached out to Malhotra and Mehta. Both remained unavailable for comment.

03 June,2025 05:35 PM IST | MumbaiVeteran actor Pankaj Tripathi, known for his standout performances in OMG 2 and Stree, takes the lead in the gripping legal drama Criminal Justice: A Family Matter. The series first premiered on JioHotstar in 2019 and has captivated audiences ever since. The latest season, Season 4, is currently streaming with new episodes dropping every Thursday. Often described as the Indian version of Suits with a quintessential Bollywood twist, the show blends legal suspense with emotional depth. Tripathi’s portrayal of lawyer Madhav Mishra—sharp, intuitive, and grounded—has been widely praised. From Mirzapur to Criminal Justice, his ability to embody diverse characters continues to mesmerize viewers. Criminal Justice Season 4 One murder, two accused, and a three-way trial! Join Pankaj Tripathi as he dons the hat of Madhav Mishra once again as the endearing lawyer gears up for his toughest case yet in Criminal Justice - A Family Matter. Directed by Rohan Sippy, produced by Applause Entertainment in association with BBC Studios India, season 4 of this beloved legacy show is streaming on JioHotstar now. This season boasts an ensemble cast consisting of Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Surveen Chawla, Asha Negi, Khushboo Atre, Barkha Singh, Aatm Prakash Mishra, alongside Mita Vashisht and Shweta Basu Prasad in pivotal roles. In the world of storytelling, it's often the audience that determines which characters transcend the screen to become cultural icons. When viewers connect deeply with a character through their vulnerability, integrity, or sheer relatability, they don't just watch the story unfold; they emotionally invest in it. That love and adulation can redefine the trajectory of a franchise. A character originally meant for a season or two evolves into the heart of the series, as seen with Pankaj Tripathi’s Madhav Mishra in Criminal Justice. What began as an adaptation of an international format has now become a uniquely Indian narrative, anchored by a character the audience embraced wholeheartedly. It’s a powerful reminder that behind every iconic role is a sea of fans whose support turns performances into legacies. Pankaj on Criminal Justice's popularity Elaborating on the same, Pankaj Tripathi said, “Criminal Justice started as an adaptation of a British show which ideally showcased different lawyers each season, but in India, Madhav Mishra became so popular that now every season revolves around him. This reflects the character’s impact and the audience’s connection. In the latest season, just when you think you’ve figured it out, the story takes a sharp turn.”
03 June,2025 04:25 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentSkepticism was Asha Negi’s first response when she was offered the fourth season of Criminal Justice. Reason? Her limited screen time. “But when I read the scenes, I realised there is so much to do. I found the character challenging and intense. People have seen me as the girl-next-door, but this character is far away from that zone,” says the actor, who plays a nurse, whose murder is at the centre of the JioHotstar series. The opportunity to be on the set with actors Pankaj Tripathi and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub was another draw for Negi. She shares, “Most of my scenes are with Zeeshan. When you’re opposite somebody so good, you are nervous and have to bring your A-game. I grew as an actor by watching him perform and sharing the screen with him. Even though I didn’t have any scenes with Pankaj sir, seeing him on set, I realised these actors are so talented, but they don’t make a fuss about being good.” Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Asha Negi in the show In the past few years, Negi has tried to build a career beyond television, where she rose to fame in the mid-2000s with shows like Bade Achhe Lagte Hain and Pavitra Rishta. She admits it’s not an easy road for actors who’ve had successful careers on the small screen. “If I were getting such meaningful roles often, you’d see me [on screen] more. TV has been a blessing because these shows made us household names and gave us popularity. But at this point, people judge us and remember us as television actors. It hampers the kind of work we want to do,” she says. But Negi knows that dwelling on the challenges will yield nothing. “I just want to keep going for auditions, and hopefully, it will help me pave my way. Things are slowly changing with Raghav Juyal, Mrunal Thakur, and Vishal Jethwa making it to films.” Popular television shows fronted by Asha Negi . Sapnon Se Bhare Naina. Bade Achhe Lagte Hain.
