Ayodhya Ram Mandir’s Dharma Dhwaj ceremony was held today, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted a 22-foot-long and 11-foot-wide saffron flag, marking a historic moment in India’s socio-cultural and spiritual landscape. Here’s everything to know about the sacred flag.
The Dharma Dhwaj carries three sacred symbols; Om, the Sun, and the Kovidara tree-- each representing profound spiritual values rooted in the Sanatan tradition. The Sun signifies Lord Ram’s Suryavansh lineage, Om represents the eternal primordial sound, and the Kovidara tree—believed to be a hybrid of the Mandar and Parijat trees—symbolises ancient knowledge of plant hybridisation.
The Ayodhya Ram Mandir flag is crafted by an Ahmedabad-based parachute specialist. Made from parachute-grade nylon interwoven with silk satin threads, it is designed to withstand winds up to 60 kmph according to recent reports, while some sources claim a capacity of up to 200 kmph. The fabric resists intense sunlight, heavy rainfall, and humidity fluctuations, as per the manufacturers. Seven artisans spent 25 days hand-stitching this sacred emblem.
Dharma Dhwaj means “flag of dharma” and is traditionally hoisted on or near the temple tower. In Hindu culture, it symbolises the victory of dharma over adharma, signifies the divine presence within the temple, and serves as a marker for devotees from afar that active worship is underway.
The Dharma Dhwaj pre-ceremony rituals began on November 20 with a Kalash Yatra—a procession of 551 urns filled with sacred Saryu river water. The Ram Mandir was adorned with 100 tonnes of flowers ahead of the event. The flag-hoisting ceremony officially marks the completion of the Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, more than a year after its consecration.
