Talwiinder opens up about the emotions behind his music talking exclusively with Mid-Day. (Pic/Special arrangement)

Talwiinder: I make music so people know they’re not alone

Ahead of his performance at NH7 Weekender in Pune, Punjabi singer-songwriter Talwinder Singh Sidhu opens about the emotional honesty that shapes his music. Known for soulful tracks like Pal Pal and Wishes, the artiste says his songs are rooted in real experiences and are meant to remind listeners that they are not alone in their struggles.  “I can’t speak for other Punjabi artists, but for me what separates my music and makes it stand out is that it comes from real, genuine feelings. Nothing is ever written just for the sake of it; it’s all truth. I make music for one reason: if someone out there is going through something I’m singing about, I want them to know they’re not alone. Everyone has ups and downs,” Talwiinder said.  Talwiinder on making music that goes viral on reels  With social media platforms like Instagram playing a giant role in determining whether a song goes viral, many artists today feel pressure to create short, catchy hooks designed for reels. “I have never forced my audience to do any hook steps or dance moves to create Reels on my songs to make them go viral; it's all in the audience's hands. My job is to make the music, and the rest is up to them. A lot of my songs went viral on social media, but all the credit goes to my audience, who spread my music as if it were their religion.”   “There’s another side that remains in the shadows”  But alongside the soft melodies and love-soaked lyrics is another visual element that has created a different kind of attachment between him and his fans—the painted face. The artistic choice, which bridges curiosity and melody, has also strengthened his connection with fans. While many know what it represents, Talwiinder hinted that it also depicts a hidden layer of a human being who wants to live a normal life.  Talking about how two different sides of Talwiinder exist alongside the artist whose music has the world grooving, the singer acknowledged that audiences have only begun to see fragments of who he is as an artist.   Talwiinder hints that there may be another side to his personality that listeners have yet to fully see.   There are two 'ii's in Talwiinder, so there is another side that remains in the shadows. I call him the host.”  For Talwiinder, music may be the language the world knows him by today, but creativity, he believes, was always destined to find its way into his life.   Long before the stage lights and the echo of fans singing 'Wishes' louder than the speakers, there was another quiet fascination that shaped the way he looked at the world. He shared that if he had not become a singer, he would have been a photographer or a cinematographer.  The Punjab-born artist was always confident about pursuing a creative path. “I would definitely be in a creative field; I have always been very fond of photography and capturing moments through a lens so that they become immortal,” said Talwiinder.   Between Punjab and San Francisco Born in the heart of Punjab and raised between cultures after moving to San Francisco, Talwiinder’s journey feels almost like the verse of one of his songs—emotional and deeply personal. Long before his music found its way into playlists and late-night drives, there was simply a boy absorbing stories, distances, and the quiet weight of feelings that would later turn into lyrics.  When asked whether a special person in his life had shaped the emotional depth of his music heard by audiences around the world, Talwiinder, searching through memories rather than words, replied in a philosophical manner.  "Yes, that someone is life. I have always been moving around and can’t stay in one place for too long, and with that comes the experience that shapes the emotional fusion in my music.”    As excitement builds for his upcoming performance at NH7 Weekender in Pune, fans are also hoping to hear something new or unreleased from the singer. When asked whether his fans in Pune could get something exclusive or unreleased, Talwiinder, staying true to his mysterious persona, said, "Let's see how I feel on the day of the event; they might or they might not get it.”

First time at NH7 Weekender? Here’s what to expect

The ICONiQ White NH7 Weekender 2026 is set to return to Mahalakshmi Lawns in Pune from March 13 to 15, bringing together thousands of music lovers for three days of live performances, comedy, food, and festival experiences. Often described as India’s happiest music festival, the event combines multiple genres of music with stand-up comedy and interactive spaces, creating a packed schedule that stretches from afternoon into late evening. This year’s edition will feature three stages hosting performances throughout the day. With multiple artists scheduled simultaneously, attendees may occasionally have to choose between performances happening at the same time. Because of this overlapping format, many regular festival-goers recommend reviewing the lineup in advance and marking the sets you don’t want to miss. Music lineup spans multiple genres ICONiQ White NH7 Weekender is known for presenting a diverse mix of artists across indie, hip-hop, electronic, folk and fusion music. Among the headline performers this year are Indian Ocean, KING, Nucleya & Friends, Prateek Kuhad, Raftaar x KR$NA and Talwiinder, alongside several emerging and independent artists performing across the three stages. The festival format also allows audiences to discover new acts throughout the weekend, with afternoon performances often introducing newer voices before evening sets by popular artists. Key comedy lineups Beyond the music, the festival also features a stand-up comedy lineup with performers from across India’s comedy circuit. Comedians such as Rahul Subramanian, Varun Thakur, Rohan Joshi and Urooj Ashfaq will take the stage during the weekend, offering humour and storytelling between music performances. These comedy sets are designed to complement the musical programming and give festival-goers a break between concerts while still staying entertained. Beat the crowd, wristband first, fun immediate Festival gates open at 2:30 pm, with the first performances beginning at 3:00 pm. Before entering the venue, attendees must show their e-ticket at the box office near the entrance to collect their entry wristband. Entry is open to all ages, but tickets are required for attendees aged three and above. Those with season tickets receive one wristband valid for all three days, which must be worn throughout the festival. Wristbands also allow re-entry to the venue during the day. Beyond music: food, activities and experiences While live performances remain the highlight, ICONiQ White NH7 Weekender offers much more than concerts. Festival-goers can explore interactive activity zones, brand experiences, a flea market and stand-up comedy shows, creating spaces to relax and socialise between sets. A dedicated food arena will offer a wide range of food and beverage options, and many attendees use it as a place to recharge during the day before returning to the stages. Comfort is the real festival hack Because festivalgoers spend several hours moving between stages and standing through performances, organisers recommend comfortable clothing and footwear. With each day running for nearly seven hours of performances, taking short breaks between sets can help visitors stay energised and enjoy the full experience. The Vibe that lasts One of the defining features of ICONiQ White NH7 Weekender is its community atmosphere. It’s often remembered as a first festival experience — discovering new artists alongside old favourites, sharing music with strangers who quickly become friends, and watching long afternoons turn into lively nights filled with laughter, conversations, and unforgettable performances. Long after the final set ends, what stays with many festival-goers is the shared energy of the crowd, the thrill of live music, and friendships that continue well beyond the weekend. Tickets for ICONiQ White NH7 Weekender 2026 are available via the District by Zomato app, the festival’s official ticketing partner.

Minister Aditi Tatkare inaugurates ‘Colours of Swades' along with others at NGMA, Mumbai.

‘Colours of Swades’: Experience India through the eyes of Nandalal Bose at NGMA

The NGMA Mumbai has opened “Colours of Swades: From Haripura to the Constitution,” a special exhibition dedicated to Nandalal Bose (1882–1966), marking the first time the gallery is presenting a dedicated show on the artist. The exhibition was inaugurated by Aditi Tatkare, Maharashtra’s Minister for Women and Child Development. 'Colours of Swades'Venue: NGMA Mumbai, Sir Cowasji Jahangir Public Hall, FortTime: 11 am to 7 pm (closed on Mondays), daily until 9th June 2026Fee: Entry is free, and all artworks are displayed for public viewing only; none are for sale Celebrating Nandalal Bose Nandalal Bose is widely regarded as a pioneer of Indian modern art. A student of Abanindranath Tagore and later principal of Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, Bose believed that Indian art should grow from its own soil rather than imitate Western styles. Over his career, he developed a unique visual language drawing from classical traditions, folk practices, and daily life, influencing generations of artists. In recognition of his contribution, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour. Speaking about the exhibition and its cynosure: Nandalal Bose, IAS Nidhi Choudhari, Director - NGMA Mumbai, shared, “The show traces the artistic and intellectual journey of Nandalal Bose, one of the foremost pioneers of Indian modern art. It is particularly special for us at NGMA Mumbai because the Haripura Panels of 1938 are being displayed here for the first time. The exhibition brings together two defining moments in Bose’s practice - the Haripura Panels that celebrate the vitality of rural India, and his work on the illustrations and visual design of the Constitution of India. Together, these works remind us that during the freedom movement, art was not merely decorative; it played a profound role in shaping the imagination and identity of the nation.” She further added that Bose shaped Indian modern art by drawing on Ajanta murals, folk traditions, temple sculpture, and rural life, creating a visual language deeply rooted in Indian culture yet strikingly modern. The Haripura Panels: Life in rural India One highlight of the exhibition is the Haripura Panels (1938), created for the Indian National Congress session at Haripura, Gujarat, created under Mahatma Gandhi’s request and guidance. The seventy-seven panels created by Bose depict farmers, artisans, musicians, women at work, and village life, rendered in bold lines and vivid colours inspired by folk traditions reflecting Bose’s belief that the true spirit of the nation lay in the everyday lives of its people. These works celebrate the dignity and rhythm of rural India while marking a landmark moment in modern Indian art, highlighted Shruti Das, Deputy Curator at NGMA Mumbai.  Bose and the Constitution of India Another key aspect of the exhibition is Bose’s role in designing the illustrations and decorative borders for the original Constitution of India. Collaborating with his students at Santiniketan, he created images tracing India’s civilisational history, from the Indus Valley Civilisation and the Ramayana to the Mughal period and the freedom movement. These illustrations make the Constitution not just a legal document, but a work of art, history, and national identity. Curatorial perspective and digital interpretation The exhibition is curated to show the connection between art, culture, and nation-building. Shruti Das, explains that the show links two critical moments in Indian history: the Haripura Panels and the Constitution illustrations, highlighting Bose as both a master artist and cultural visionary. The exhibition also includes digital interpretations of the Haripura Panels, created with AI assistance by filmmaker Ebyug Akhil, bringing the rural scenes to life and providing an interactive experience for younger audiences. Key people who inaugurated the Exhibition The exhibition was inaugurated by Aditi Tatkare, Maharashtra’s Minister for Women and Child Development. Also present were Nidhi Choudhari, Director of NGMA Mumbai; Shruti Das, Curator of NGMA Mumbai; renowned art historian Dr. Saryu Doshi; philanthropist Dr. Aneel Kashi Murarka; international guests Kaneko Toshihiro and Aliaksandr Matsukou; Him Chatterjee, Vice Chancellor of Sir JJ School of Arts; Rajiv Mishra, Principal of Sir JJ School of Arts; prominent art collector Kishor Jhunjhunwala; and artists Prakash Bal Joshi, Varsha Karale, Nayanaa Kanodia, and Sanjukta Barik, among many others.
