Anyone looking for a wholistic fitness routine, can't do without incorporating cardio
Cardio is a dreaded word for some people; while for others it is something they can't get enough of. No matter how you feel about it, cardiovascular exercise should be the key component of any fitness plan.
The first word that usually comes to most people's mind when they think of a cardio workout is 'treadmill'. I hate the treadmill! I really do! I hate the idea of running forever and not really getting anywhere... and that too within a confined space.
So, I constantly try different ways to get my dose of cardio from climbing stairs to cycling. There are loads of ways that you can get your heart pumping without stepping on the treadmill.
The Benefits
But first up, why is cardio so essential? Firstly, because it improves heart health. Your heart is a muscle just like any other and it must be worked to remain in peak condition. If you fail to exercise it, it will weaken over time, which can impact your health in many negative ways.
Secondly, doing cardio releases 'feel-good' hormones, which help ease depression and fatigue, and also helps in strengthening the immune system. People, who do cardio at least thrice a week for an hour, are less likely to catch colds and viruses.
Cardiovascular exercise also plays an important part in increasing metabolism. Finally, and most importantly, cardio helps you stay in shape and look great.
I love being outdoors. If you are someone who enjoys the outdoors and are willing to take some time out, there are numerous ways to make this interesting for yourself.
Rock-climbing is a great outdoor activity. It not only helps one burn calories, but is also great for strength training. If you check on the Internet, you will find several companies that organise trips over the weekend.
If you don't want things to be too hectic, trekking is a great option. Keep in mind though that trekking requires planning and you don't actually need to get out of the city to get your cardio fix. If you're looking for a shortcut, several gyms offer rock-climbing walls nowadays.
While the monsoon might seem like the wrong season to be outdoors, if you don't mind braving the rains, there really is nothing as satisfying as a run on the beach or a ride on a cycle, in pouring rain.
Rain or no rain, get out there, and burn some calories, in the great, wide open.
