Sixty-three years after our Independence, here's a ticket to express your idea of freedom on film whether you're 15 or 75

Sometimes, the simplest of ideas can turn into powerful, pathbreaking instruments of voice, reason and expression.

That's exactly what happened when a bunch of like-minded professionals from the media, performing arts and social activism sphere put their heads together, a fortnight ago, to create the Redefine Freedom Video Project.

"We have been free from colonial rule for 63 years. Since then, how have we defined freedom? What does it mean to us?

To the world around us? Are we free? It was questions like these that triggered off a range of concerns, and the need to create a platform," says Mumbai-based TV professional Neha Jain about the project's inception.

"We wanted to bring unheard ideas and wishes of common Indians to the forefront, through an audio-video format."

The proposal is simple. Redefine Freedom is soliciting videos that define freedom. Choose your medium from cell phones to high-definition cameras.

The idea is to create a succession of still images that will be testimonial to a webcam.

Mumbai-based Faiza Ahmed (filmmaker), Aditi Seshadri (attached to an NGO), Shweta Venkat (documentary editor), Arghya Lahiri (theatreperson), Neha and Delhi-based art historian Rukmini Rathore are behind the project.

"Most of us are conscious citizens, but not motivated enough to join a demonstration. What drew me to the project was that it wasn't a limited proposition with a set goal.

I'm not on Facebook or Twitter, but the use of technology is the perfect window to see what the real India wants to say; it should be interesting," adds Arghya, while admitting that he hasn't interacted with every member of the group. "The democracy of the unknown voice is refreshing."

The group isn't worried about numbers they will attract. "All we are seeking is a definition of freedom.

We'll take what we get; three films, seven films, eight hundred and seven clips, and we'll fuse it together as an exhibition of expression, and upload it," says Neha.

The response so far has been diverse and overwhelming enough for them to contemplate extending their earlier deadline of August 15.u00a0
