Gadget review: Asus India launches flagship Zenfone 2 smartphone

After launching Zenfone range of smartphones last year, Asus India, on Thursday launched its new device, the Zenfone 2.


The Zenfone 2 will be available in four different versions - two low-end versions - ZE550ML for Rs 12,999 and Rs 14,999 and two high-end ones - ZE551ML for Rs 19,999 (32GB) and Rs 22,999 (64GB).

The high end devices feature a 5.5-inch full HD (1920x1080) IPS display with pixel density of 403ppi and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

The processing power comes from a 64-bit Intel quad core processor, Z3580 running at 2.3 GHz whereas the in-built RAM stands at 4GB. Both get a 13 MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture with dual colour LED flash and a 5 MP front camera also with f/2.0 aperture.

The Zenfone 2 can also capture 52 MP images using PixelMaster app in the Super Resolution mode. As for connectivity the Zenfone 2 gets 2G, 3G as well as 4G LTE Cat4. It also supports WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac bands, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC and five navigation systems - GPS, GLONASS, QZSS, SBAS and Beidou.

The devices weigh 170g and are powered by a 3,000 mAh Li-ion battery with fast-charging technology. The Zenfone2 is a dual sim smartphone, the functional of both of them active at the same time. However, the second sim is limited only to 2G. The device will be available in two storage options - 32GB and 64GB.

As for the low-end models - ZE550ML, the specifications remain more or less the same with a few exceptions. Two of the most noted differences are a relatively inferior processor, 64-bit1.8 GHz quad core Intel Atom Z3560 processor and 2GB RAM.

The low end ZE550ML also doesn't support NFC and fast-charging found in the high-end models. This low end versions will be available in two different models out of which one is priced at Rs 12,999 featuring a 5.5-inch IPS display with 1280x720 resolution and 268 ppi pixel density and the other at Rs 14,999 featuring a full HD screen (1920x1080). The other specifications remain the same.
