Chheda Stores in Matunga is one of several success stories in the city. Walking in for the first time, I felt a little like a kid on the first day in a new school: Everyone else seemed to know where to go, what to do and where the teacher was.

I was lost and overwhelmed by the number of mind-boggling options on hand. So, yes, a shopping list will help. Also, there are two Chheda stores alongside each other, and if it’s farsan you’re looking for, you want to head to Chheda Dry Fruits. Despite all the jostling and the seeming chaos, the people who work in the store are happy to help out with a suggestion or two.
If you’re looking for a place to start and are a fan of khakhra, I would suggest trying the Special Onion Khakhra. The light khakhras carry the flavour of what taste like spring onions (is that why the onions are ‘special’?) and make for a tasty snack.
