Sewri Cemetery

It’s one of those dates that few in the city wouldu00a0normally recall. Back in March 1867, Municipal Commissioner Arthur Crawford commissioned a plot in Sewri (then called Sewree), one of the seven isles from the old agri-horticultural society’s gardens beside salt pans owned by the East India Company and a fort too, to make it the prime cemetery for the city’s Christian inhabitants, to bury their dead.u00a0

Architects, officers of the BB & CI (Bombay Baroda & Central India, now Western) and GIP (Great Indian Peninsular, now Central) Railways, Chief Justices, civic engineers, sheriffs, policemen, nurses, sailors from passing ships, chief surgeons, Lieutenants, Colonels and naval officers are laid to rest here in stunningly carved stone graves, separated into Protestant and Catholic sections.
