Doctors in Thane have give an elderly man a new lease of life after successfully removing a massive 2.5 kg liver tumour from a 58-year-old male patient without requiring a single unit of blood transfusion.

The patient, who had been seeking solutions at multiple centres, was grappling not just with a life-threatening tumour but also with the emotional and financial burden of treatment.

Eventually, he visited Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where diagnostic scans revealed that the tumour had engulfed the entire right lobe and extended into the left — making it a complex and high-risk case.

After thorough imaging, including CT angiography with volumetric liver analysis, and rigorous medical fitness evaluations, the hospital’s expert Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary (HPB) team opted for a single-stage tumour resection.

The procedure was led by Dr Anand Ramamurthy, director – Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery with Dr Gaurav Patel and Dr Ankush Golhar, senior consultants – Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery.

Dr Ramamurthy said, “Despite the tumour’s size and complexity, meticulous planning helped us avoid a blood transfusion. The patient is recovering well in the ICU."

The patient’s financial challenges were significantly eased by the Jupiter Cancer Institute’s subsidised treatment programme, which brought down the cost of Rs 7 lakh procedure by nearly 70 per cent.

“This case is a testament to our commitment to advanced care without financial barriers,” said Dr Patel.
