The ground beneath the ski

If you're a daredevil, looking for your next thrill, head to the alpine slopes of Kufri in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh.



Considered as one of the oldest ski slopes in the state (it was discovered in 1930 by a British army general), travellers throng this ski destination to get a high with their ski obsession or toboggan their way on it powdered snowy undulating slopes. Interestingly, the region gets its name from the local dialect, where "Kufr" stands for a lake.

Despite being one of the smallest hill stations in the region, it enjoys a reputation as the winter sports capital of India. The landscape is dotted with potato plantations and boasts of breeds of potatoes called Kufri Chandramukhi and Kufri Jyoti.

However, during winter, the paths running through the potato plantations are turned into ski tracks. As soon as snowfall caps these tracts, amateurs and professionals can be seen honing their skills on Kufri's multi-obstacle slopes.

Situated at an altitude of 2,622m, Kufri is snow-clad from December to March when you can spot picture postcard-style pine trees covered with snow. In January, Kufri plays host to the Annual National Snow Statue competition organised by the tourism and travel department of Himachal Pradesh.

This event offers a perfect chance to discover the beautiful ice sculptures, including animals and monument shaped life-sized specimens.

And once you are done with getting your kicks from all that skiing, head towards its two other major attractions: the Himalayan National Park and Indira Park. These are your best bets for panoramic views of the Himalayas; and of course you cannot leave without embarking on a pony or yak ride.
