Conversations about conservation do not always have to be in lengthy powerpoint presentations. Walk into the Continuum exhibition by INTACH on August 6, and you might learn its true extent. “People often ascribe heritage to built structures, but it goes far beyond that,” explains Katyayani Agarwal, convenor, Mumbai Chapter of Indian National Trust of Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

“The panel discussions involve people who were key to crafting the Heritage Laws, and those who worked for it on the ground. Our objective was to raise awareness about the work, as well as about heritage that is all around us,” she adds. To this end, the panel discussions on Mumbai’s Art Deco design and legacy moderated by Mustansir Dalvi, and conservation architect Kirtida Unwalla’s examination of the role of conservation in a changing world will be mirrored by The Mythology Project’s exploration of the different myths and faiths that are housed in Mumbai.

Students put together a book installation
Yet, the exhibition is not limited to the city. “There are five installations that highlight different facets of INTACH. These include an immersive installation by copper artisans from Pune, paper craftsmen from across the country will design new installation on the ceiling of the gallery, as well as a unique design that highlights the tools of conservation,” shares Agarwal. The highlight for Mumbaikars will be a scale design of the GPO building created after a month-long campaign by students of the IES College of Architecture. “Our objective was to talk about the living cultural heritage across the country, and to help the younger generation take an active interest in them,” Agarwal concludes.
