Monsoons in Mumbai are magical, if described in a word, and when combined with an event that serves the definition of elegance and divinity, makes the season even more memorable. The Raindrops Festival, hosted by Samved Society for Performing Arts helmed by renowned Kathak exponent and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Uma Dogra, is back with a series of classical performances to celebrate the festival’s 35th year with Veerangana — a celebration of women power.

“The festival is dedicated to young artists of this country who are serious about pursuing this art form and are dancing professionally. Young girls and women practicing different classical dance styles from across the country have been given a stage to showcase women power,” states Dogra. The founder and director of the organisation passed the reign to her disciples and senior dancers, Indrayanee Mukherjee and Suhani Singh 15 years ago, who since then, have been organising the festival and filtering applicants deserving of the stage.

The two-day dance festival will host four Kathak dancers, namely Amartyya Chatterjee Ghosh, Shikha Sharma, Anukriti Vishwakarma and Tarini Tripathi; Krishnabhadra Namboothiri and Medha Hari will be performing Bharatanatyam while Shayomita Dasgupta and Kalamandalam Pooja will perform Odissi and Kuchipudi, respectively.

Kalamandalam Pooja, a Kuchipudi dancer expresses her excitement to perform at the upcoming event, “I am looking forward to becoming a part of the legacy festival the city has been witnessing since 34 years. To carry forward this legacy in its 35th year marks an enthralling moment in my dance journey too! I am eagerly looking forward to meeting the rasikas of Mumbai and becoming a milestone through my art.”
