The police have arrested four people from Andheri for allegedly stealing money from people’s bank accounts using fake debit and credit cards, an officer said on Friday.
Acting on a tip, the police on Wednesday arrested three persons with a skimmer, nine cards with magnetic strips, seven debit cards, three mobile phones and Rs 27,000 cash, the officer said.

The arrests led the cops to the brain behind the crimes. The thefts came to light when the deputy manager (risk intelligence and control) of a prominent bank lodged a complaint that some persons had withdrawn money from customers’ accounts with fake debit and credit cards between November 2020 and January 2021, he said.
According to the complaint, the customers never received OTPs, but money would get deducted from their accounts, he said.
During a probe, the MIDC police found that many transactions were carried out with the fake cards from a hotel at Mahakali Caves in Andheri East.
Stole lakhs in 6 months
The alleged fraudsters, all in their 20s, had been stealing money since the past six months and had taken away lakhs of rupees, he said. The main accused faces similar offences at Oshiwara and Kherwadi earlier, he said.
The gang members were also seen in CCTV footage from ATMs in Pune and Satara, he said. The four have been remanded in police custody till Saturday.
