Mumbai: Three arrested for stealing cash, gold worth Rs 40.90 lakh from producer’s home

The arrested accused were identified as Sarvesh Sharma (45) Mushtaqueem Shaikh (28) and Divesh Sawasiya (31)

The Bangur Nagar police within 48 hours arrested three men on Tuesday night who stole cash and jewellery worth Rs 40.90 lakh from a TV serial producer-director Santosh Gupta in Goregaon.

The arrested accused were identified as Sarvesh Sharma (45) Mushtaqueem Shaikh (28) and Divesh Sawasiya (31). According to the police, the mastermind of the crime was Sharma, who is a contractor, and used to work for Gupta.

The two accused Shaikh and Sawarsiya used to work on the film set as welders and furniture makers.

Gupta bought a new house in Mumbai and had given an interior decoration contract to Sharma.

He knew about Gupta’s financial status very well and gave the information to the duo who robbed Gupta’s house by tying Gupta’s helper Vikas Chaudhary on Sunday afternoon.

When the incident was reported to the Bangur Nagar police a team was formed under the guidance of DCP Ajay Kumar Bansal and ACP Renuka Badge. The monitoring team led by senior inspector Pramod Tavde scanned the CCTV footages of the building and the nearby area. Since the accused were wearing masks, the police could not identify them. However, when they checked CCTV footage in the locality, the accused were seen buying the masks from a medical shop.

"The duo was caught on camera without masks and with different clothes," said a police officer from Bangur Nagar police station.

"We traced the accused, a resident in Bhagat Singh Nagar. With the help of locals and informants, we caught the duo from Andheri along with the stolen cash and gold ornaments," the police officer added.

The cash and gold ornaments recovered were more than what the complainant reported at the police station during the registration of the FIR. We have recovered Rs 40.90 lakh in cash from the accused, the officer added.

During further interrogation, the arrested duo revealed that the plan was hatched by Sarvesh Sharam (45) who worked as a contractor for Gupta.

The officers investigating the case said that Sharam had worked for Gupta on the sets and at his house so he was aware that Gupta had money at home. He also knew the location of the safe and that Chaudhary would be alone at home.

He planned the entire heist with the help of the duo who used to work as workers in the sets, the officer said.

"The three men have been arrested for robbery, were produced before the court and the court remanded them police custody," said another officer.

Two unknown miscreants allegedly stole Rs 25.35 lakh in cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 35,000 from the home of TV serial producer-director Santosh Ravishankar Gupta in Goregaon West on Sunday afternoon. According to Bangur Nagar police, Gupta, 51, resides at Dhiraj Residency near Oshiwara bus depot on New Link Road along with his helper Vikas Chaudhary, who prepares his meals and executes his office work.

Around 1.28 pm on Sunday, when Gupta was out at work with his office staffer Jaysingh Rathod, Chaudhary called him, claiming that two masked men had entered the house. The duo had allegedly caught hold of Chaudhary and, brandishing a pistol, pushed him into the kitchen after tying his hand and mouth. They then allegedly broke the door of the bedroom and grabbed cash and valuables from the cupboard.

As per the statement given to the police, Gupta called his neighbor and asked him to look into the matter. “On the complaint of Gupta, we have registered the case under Sections 34 (common intention), 392 (robbery), and 454 (house trespass) of the IPC and various sections of the Arms Act,” a cop said.
