Tensions rose in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area on Sunday night after an idol of Goddess Durga was allegedly damaged during a procession ahead of Navratri 2025, police said, reported the PTI.
The idol was being carried through a narrow lane when some people noticed that one of its hands was broken. This led to an argument between two groups, with one blaming the other for the damage.
According to the police, the argument soon turned into a physical fight, with members of both sides assaulting each other. Officers from Mankhurd Police Station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, as per the PTI.
Seven people were arrested and a case was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of assault and unlawful assembly, police said.
The officials said that the group transporting the idol is part of a local mandal that celebrates Navratri every year. Their investigation revealed that the idol was found broken while being moved through the narrow lane.
The situation in the area is now under control, and further investigation in the matter is ongoing, said the police.
50 detained after stone-pelting incident in Vadodara
Meanwhile, in an another incident in Gujarat, at least 50 individuals have been detained following a stone-pelting incident in Vadodara’s Zunigadhri area late on Friday night, police said on Saturday, according to the ANI.
The incident reportedly began after a social media post sparked tensions within the community. In response, a crowd gathered at the local police station to lodge a complaint. As the crowd began to disperse, a group allegedly attacked a nearby Navratri pandal, damaged parked vehicles, and resorted to stone-pelting in the locality, reported the ANI.
Police acted swiftly to bring the situation under control.
"We responded immediately and managed to contain the situation quickly. So far, 50 individuals have been detained, and a detailed investigation is underway to ensure all those responsible are held accountable," said Vadodara Deputy Commissioner of Police Andrew Macwan, the news agency reported.
No reports of serious injuries have emerged, and police presence remains heightened in the area to prevent further incidents.
