Mumbai airport gears up ahead of monsoon in city

Amid meticulous pre-monsoon preparations, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai successfully concluded its runway repair and maintenance work on Thursday, the officials said. The maintenance began at 1100 hrs, and after thorough assessment and evaluation, both runways - RWY 14/32 & 09/27 - are now fully operational for all flight movements starting from 1700 hrs, they said. "CSMIA is the busiest single-runway airport in the world, with over 950 air traffic movements per day. CSMIA's maintenance efforts prioritize operational efficiency and passenger convenience, with a focus on resilience against Mumbai rains," stated a CSMIA spokesperson. "Anticipating the challenges posed by Mumbai's monsoon season, CSMIA conducted multiple runway inspections to prepare for the challenges posed by the monsoon. Various pre-monsoon measures were implemented, including the identification and inspection of waterlogged areas, health checks of runways by both machine and manual observation to detect superficial cracks, disjoints, and texture irregularities. Additionally, close to 5,000 aeronautical ground lights on runways and taxiways were serviced and checked, along with the removal and repainting of 1,300 ground markings providing directional guidance to aircraft," the spokesperson added. "Furthermore, repair works around the runway, such as segregating electric cables for the primary and secondary runway, minor and major repairs on runway intersections, and complex tasks such as the Geotechnical survey by civil engineers for runway 14/32, were completed. To prevent water-logging, over 2,000 drains and duct banks across the runways were opened, inspected, and cleaned. This ensures the integrity of cables, underground utilities, and the proper functioning of the aeronautical lighting system essential for aircraft navigation. Additionally, associated activities such as grass cutting, chamfering, milling, and filling were also carried out swiftly and efficiently," said an official involved in the maintenance activity. "CSMIA has meticulously crafted a monsoon contingency plan in collaboration with stakeholders, ensuring swift responses to inclement weather. This plan enables uninterrupted operations, bolstering confidence for airlines and passengers alike. Through effective coordination with airlines, flights have been successfully rescheduled. CSMIA's dedication to passenger safety, supported by its infrastructure and operational excellence, remains steadfast year-round," he added.

A truck being towed after breaking down on the expressway

Heatwave paralyses Mumbai-Pune expressway

The intense heat sweeping across the state isn't just inconveniencing commuters on their way to work, but it's also disrupting the plans of families and friends heading for vacations to various destinations across Pune, Sangli, Satara, and the Konkan region. According to reports from the highway police, breakdowns of both cars and heavy vehicles due to the heat are causing traffic jams on the Mumbai Pune Express Highway. The Maharashtra State Highway Police claim that in April alone, approximately 211 vehicles, predominantly cars during the day and heavy vehicles at night, experienced breakdowns on the ghat section. Also Read: Vital organ damage to death: Mumbai doctors share tips to protect yourself from heatstroke in summer The excessive heat caused several breakdowns on the highway “As per data, 211 vehicles broke down in April. Usually while travelling on the Bhor ghat or near the Lonavala side of the express highway. As vehicles ascend the ghat, their acceleration leads to overheating, eventually causing breakdowns. These breakdowns not only halt the traffic but also create daily congestion along the ghat section, as observed over the past few days,” said a police officer. “Two vehicles, a bus, and an Ertiga caught fire caused by short-circuiting, resulting in significant damage. The fire brigade, locals, traffic police, and highway police helped remove the vehicles without any reported injuries. However, the incident occurred on a busy road, triggering panic among commuters. Instead of immediately contacting the authorities, some individuals opted to capture videos and photos near the burning vehicles,” said the police officer.  Pune, Sangli, Satara, and the Konkan region are mainly affected  According to data from the highway police, on weekdays, there are typically 35,000 to 40,000 cars and heavy vehicles moving along the highway. However, during weekends, this number spikes to 50,000 to 60,000 vehicles on both the ghat and express highway. This route isn't just used by vehicles heading towards Pune, Satara, Sangli, and Kolhapur. A significant portion of travellers bound for Konkan, including Ratnagiri and other regions, opt for this road. Being a state highway, it also serves as a route for vehicles heading towards Karnataka and other southern areas, contributing to the increased traffic flow. The Maharashtra State Highway Police consistently raise awareness and issue alerts regarding vehicle overheating. “Our officers are stationed at the toll naka before the ascent, making continuous announcements advising drivers to turn off their air conditioning to prevent their vehicles from overheating. Likewise, we encourage both cars and heavy vehicles to pause before the ascent, allowing their vehicles to cool down,” said Tanaji Chikhale, Superintendent of State Highway Police, Raigad.  “The Indian Reserve Batallion had provided them with a crane and towing van. “We have our team deployed at the spot and ghat section. As soon as there is a breakdown happens our team reaches the spot. But many times it does take time to reach the spot due to the traffic snarls. However, creating awareness and alertness among the travellers is also very important,” added Chikhale.

All the candidates of Sharad Pawar's party are losing, says Bawankule

Maharashtra BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Wednesday said "all the candidates of Sharad Pawar's party are losing the Lok Sabha elections 2024", reported news agency ANI. Amid ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024, while speaking to ANI, Bawankule said, "The opposition leader Supriya Sule is going to lose too." Pertinent to note that Supriya Sule is contesting from the Baramati seat, which comprises 6 Assembly seats: Indapur, Baramati, Purandar, Bhor, Khadakwasla, and Daund. The contest in Baramati is between Pawar versus Pawar as Sharad Pawar's nephew Ajit Pawar, who split from the Sharad Pawar-led NCP to form his party has fielded his wife Sunetra Pawar against Supriya Sule. Sule has been a three-time MP from the same constituency and is eyeing a fourth term from Baramati. She had won from here by defeating BJP candidate Kanchan Rahul Kul in 2019. The Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) broke into two factions, on July 2, 2023, after Ajit Pawar took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister along with seven NCP MLAs. The state, with its 48 Lok Sabha seats, is the second-largest contributor to the lower house of Parliament after Uttar Pradesh known for its political diversity and significant electoral influence, Maharashtra plays a crucial role in shaping national politics. In the 2019 elections, the BJP emerged as the largest party with 23 seats, followed by the Shiv Sena with 18 seats. (With inputs from ANI)

Ajit Pawar urges Shirur voters to elect person who can actually work

Amid ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has slammed NCP-Sharadchandra Pawar nominee Amol Kolhe for "wasting five years as an MP" and urged voters to support Shivajirao Adhalrao, the MahaYuti candidate for Shirur Lok Sabha seat, to ensure progress, reported news agency IANS. "Kolhe was only busy shooting and wasted five years. In order to address pending issues like roads, railways, and dams, assistance from the Centre and state government is required. Therefore, elect a person who can actually work," Pawar said at a Lok Sabha elections 2024 campaign meeting in Ghodegaon of Shirur Lok Sabha seat on Wednesday, reported IANS. The Deputy CM said after his party (NCP) joined the Mahayuti government, "it carried out works worth Rs 600 crore in Ambegaon". "Compensation of Rs 17 crore was paid for the loss of Hirda Vanaspati within eight days. Through district planning, Rs 68 crore funds were allocated for Ambegaon. Had we not been in power, would we be able to do all this work?" he said, adding, "We solved the issue of onion export ban. We will soon resolve the issue of milk prices as well. More infrastructural work can be done if we remain in power. Bear this in mind and vote for Adhalrao," reported IANS. Adhalrao in his speech said that he raked up issues of bullock cart racing and railway works. "It took Madhu Dandavate 28 years to bring Konkan Railway. I have also been pursuing for Pune-Nashik railway for the last 13 years. I have been striving for bullock cart racing for the last 25-30 years. I took on three cases, fought cases in the High Court and Supreme Court, spent money, and eventually won... What did the incumbent MP do?" he said, reported IANS. Adhalrao further said, "I ensured roads in Banakarfata-Ghodegaon-Bhimashankar-Taleghar-Rajgurunagar by urging Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. I spent funds of Rs 2.5 crore for the Wada-Ghoda road. The work on the monument of Sambhaji Maharaj worth Rs 190 crore is underway in Vadhu. Kolhe adopted Kopri village where women still used to walk down 2 km to fetch water. My people have ensured that tankers reach them for the last two months. The one who has never worked... needs to be shown his true place by the people." Kolhe and Adhalrao are pitted against each other once again after the 2019 elections. It was Kolhe as the nominee of NCP (united) who had defeated Adhalrao, who contested as the Shiv Sena (united) candidate in the last elections. Adhalrao had won from the Shirur constituency as the Shiv Sena (united) nominee in the 2004, 2009 and 2014 elections. (With inputs from IANS)

Waris Pathan

I would have been jailed immediately if: Waris demands action against Rana

Reacting to BJP leader Navneet Rana's "15 seconds lagenge" remark, AIMIM leader Waris Pathan questioned why the police and the Election Commission have not taken any "action" against her and claimed that if he had said something like this, he would have been "jailed," reported ANI. In a self-made video, the AIMIM leader said that Rana was making such remarks because she understood that she is badly losing from Amravati seat this time, reported ANI. "Navneet Rana knows that she is badly losing from Amravati this time. She is unable to accept this and that is why she is uttering all this nonsense. What will you do if the police are removed for 15 seconds? What will she do if the police are removed? Will you kill all Muslims? What are the police and administration doing? Why has no action been taken so far? What is the Election Commission doing? Are such statements allowed in elections? We would like the Election Commissioner to take cognisance of this statement and take strict action. BJP has come to realise that this time it is difficult for them to cross 200-250 seats. If I said something like this, I would have been jailed immediately. Why is everyone silent now?" he said. Meanwhile, Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan said that the BJP is working in the direction of PM Modi to spread "hatred" in the country, reported ANI. "PM Modi and Amit Shah are spreading hatred in society so it is natural that their workers and candidates are also going to do the same. What Akbaruddin Owaisi has said is wrong and what Navnit Rana has said is also extremely shameful. They are all working in the direction of PM Modi to spread hatred in the country because PM Modi is losing this election badly. I will issue such a request to the Election Commission that both statements should be investigated and action should be taken against them," Prithviraj Chavan said, reported ANI. Invoking a provocative statement by AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi from 2013, BJP leader Navneet Rana issued a veiled warning to the Owaisi brothers in their stronghold Hyderabad on Wednesday. To the AIMIM leader's statement that they would take them all of '15 minutes' to balance out the "Hindu-Muslim ratio" in the country, Navneet, who seeking a fresh term in the Lok Sabha from Amravati, on a BJP ticket this time; hit back at the Owaisi brothers, saying "it would take us 15 seconds if the police were removed or made to stand down", reported ANI. "The younger brother says 'Remove the police for 15 minutes so that we can show them what we can do'. I want to tell the younger brother (Akbaruddin) that it might take you 15 minutes, but it will only take us 15 seconds...it will take us all of 15 seconds if we come to the forefront," Rana was heard saying in a video clip she posted on her X handle, tagging the Owaisi brothers, reported ANI. At a meeting in 2013, Akbaruddin warned "100 crore Hindus" that his community would show what it could do if the police were withdrawn for '15 minutes', reported ANI. Asaduddin has been the elected representative from Hyderabad since 2004. He was previously elected as an MLA twice in the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh. Owaisi faces BJP leader Madhavi Latha. Voting for all 17 seats in Telangana will take place on May 13 in the fourth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024. (With inputs from ANI)

Five persons detained for showing black flags to Devendra Fadnavis' convoy

Five people were detained by police in north Maharashtra's Dhule district after they showed black flags to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' convoy on Wednesday afternoon and released later, a police official said, reported news agency PTI. The incident took place at Karvand Naka in Shirpur, he said. Fadnavis was on his way to Jalgaon to campaign after finishing a Lok Sabha elections 2024 rally in Shirpur when the protesters came on the road, the official said, reported PTI. They belonged to Adivasi and Koli communities and wanted to protest as their long-pending demands had not been fulfilled. They were taken to Shirpur police station and released after giving a warning, the official added, reported PTI. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said making Narendra Modi prime minister for the third time would mean responding to every bullet fired from Pakistan with a cannon shell, and accused the Congress of promoting the agenda of the neighbouring country, reported PTI. Shah was speaking at a Lok Sabha elections 2024 campaign rally in Jalna Lok Sabha constituency in central Maharashtra for Union minister and BJP candidate Raosaheb Danve. "Making Narendra Modi PM for the third time means responding to every bullet from Pakistan with a cannon shell," he said. In the BJP-led NDA, it is decided who would be the prime minister after the elections, but in the opposition's INDIA bloc, decision was yet to be taken on the issue, the senior BJP leader said, reported PTI. "Their leaders say they will become PM one by one. But such a huge country can not be run like a partnership company. They don't have any vision. But Modi has worked for ten years and has an agenda of 25 years," Shah said, reported PTI. He also alleged that if there was anyone who takes forward Pakistan's agenda, it was Rahul Gandhi's Congress. "PM Modi undertakes surgical and air strikes (against Pakistan), but Rahul Gandhi questions them. Modi ended Naxalism, but Rahul raises questions over it," the Union home minister said. The Congress-led opposition was talking about revoking the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and if it came to power, it would commit the "sin of putting a lock with the name Babri on it on (Ayodhya's) Ram Mandir," he alleged.
