That's what motorists have paid the traffic department for violating traffic rules on the sea link

Driving on the Sea Link may have been toll free for the past five days, but that has not stopped the government from earning revenue from the bridge.

Traffic violations on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (or rather, Rajiv Gandhi Samudra Setu) have brought in over Rs 50,000 to the police kitty.

Since the Sea Link opened on July 1, traffic cops have penalised over 100 drivers for violating driving rules, taking U-turns on the link and stopping cars to take pictures.

"My friends and I wanted to take a joy ride on the Sea Link early Thursday morning. Midway, we found that the traffic was really heavy, so we took a U-turn to go back.

We were caught by a traffic cop and fined. He took my driving licence and told me to pay Rs 500 as fine right then or pay Rs 700 the next day and get it back from the Worli traffic police station."

R N Dusar, senior inspector, Worli Traffic police station, said, "The traffic department at Worli and the Worli police station's city police have together fined more than 100 motorists for taking U-turns and stopping on the link to take pictures.

We had to fine them because they were increasing traffic congestion."

However, Dusar admitted that since travelling on the sea link was no longer toll free, traffic has come down to 10 to 20 per cent of what it was earlier.

"On Monday, we did not fine a single person, as nobody broke any of the rules," he said.
