On the night of December 31, the police caught 882 people across the city for drunken driving. Seventy-nine of them, including two women, were convicted by the court yesterday.
A total of 50 teams of around 1,800 police officers made this drive possible. This time, the cops used a special strategy of changing their positions and also conducting the drive for a longer duration than last year from 11 pm to 7 am.
"The police nabbed 26 offenders from Trombay because they continued the campaign till 7 am. We were aware that due to the tension in the city, more people would opt to go to nearby places for celebrations and return during morning hours," said DCP (traffic) Harish Baijal.
Policemen who do not belong to the traffic department contributed by nabbing 338 of the total offenders. "They have all the authority to arrest such people and also the required equipment," said Sanjay Barve, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
Past offenders
In 2008, 16,450 offenders were booked for drunken driving compared to 11,416 in 2007. 2,623 were convicted in 2007, while 8,448 were convicted in 2008. Eighteen women were booked in 2008.
