The Central Railway has on Wednesday inaugurated 13 new hi-tech Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTVs), enhancing their vigilance on the movement of crowd at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).
"The CCTVs will monitor the movement of the crowd day and night. The existing and newly operational cameras will not only get enhanced picture resolution and zooming facility but also have the technology of panning a whole 180 degrees," SC Mudgerikar, Chief PRO of Central Railway (CR) said.
With this the number of cameras operational at the CST reached to 51 that are being monitored by Railway Protection Force (RPF).
The new CCTVs, inaugurated by CR General Manager BB Modgil, will keep watch on every movement of the commuters of local and long-distance trains.
"Rs 30 lakh has been spent on the high-tech cameras while Rs 40 lakh were spent to upgrade existing 38 cameras. This is a part of overall security revamp at the terminus," he added.
The surveillance measure follows the Mumbai terror strikes at city's iconic railway station. The CCTV footages will be stored for 15 days instead of earlier one-week period by Railway Protection Force (RPF), which will also have a control room at the station.
The CR has also decided to increase the number of sniffer dogs to 20. Presently CR has 11 sniffer dogs which are on job at the CTS.
"We have already procured four Labradors which are being trained now. Another five dogs will be procured soon," said Mudgerikar.
