Rash bikers are becoming a nightmare for traffic constables, deployed at the J J Flyover signal and Bhendi Bazar junction, who are increasingly complaining of being pushed and abused for performing their duties. On Tuesday at 11 pm, this Sunday MiD DAY reporter witnessed a rider pushing and abusing a traffic constable, who tried to stop him for breaking traffic rules.

The police say they find it difficult to chase the offenders as they are expert riders and manage to disappear in the crowd. "We are pushed, kicked and abused. We cannot control them as they drive rashly and sometimes they are in large numbers. It is difficult for us to chase them as there is a maximum of two constables at a signal," a constable said.

The owners of the shops near the signal agree with the constable and suggest that senior authorities deploy more constables at the signal. "Two constables cannot handle the situation at the signal because the area is always crowded and the bikers are very rash. There have been times when the bikers have managed to ride away, snatching caps off constables' heads. The cops can only be mute spectators and watch them disappear in the crowd," a local said.

"We have complained to our seniors about the incidents, but no help has been provided. We want more policemen to be deployed in the area to control the nuisance," the constable added. M Patil, Senior Police Inspector, Pydhonie traffic police station said, "Yes, there are reports that the constables are abused and pushed. Those offenders who have been nabbed, have been penalised."
