The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken this decision to preserve greenery in the city.
No trees will be cut while constructing skywalks, said Anand Kumar Pahal, MMRDA Additional Chief Engineer and in-charge of the skywalk project. A skywalk is an elevated walkway that connects railway stations to nearby important locations for convenience of commuters.
The agency came in for sharp criticism from citizens' associations and NGOs for cutting trees while taking up infrastructure work.
"There are hundreds of old trees around the station areas. The alignment of skywalks have been designed and finalised only after considering this issue," Pahal said.
"We did not cut a single tree while constructing skywalks at Bandra (East) and Kanjurmarg (East)," Pahal added.
However, he said that some branches may be trimmed by a few inches if they fall on the walkway. "For this, we seek necessary permission from concerned authority," he said.
