Thane: A case was registered against a 50-year-old farmer who allegedly tried to commit suicide over financial crunch at Murbad town in the district, police said on Friday.

Barku Valku Thackeray, a resident of Koltan village, consumed pesticide on May 26 over loan burden, Police Inspector (PI) Ashok Amle of Murbad police station said. He was rushed to a hospital where he was treated and his life was saved, the PI said.

The farmer was under a bank debt of Rs 33,000. He also suffered crop failure recently because of which he was distressed and tried to end his life, the official said. The case was yesterday registered against the accused under section 309 of IPC, he said, adding further investigation is on.
