Minister of State for Home and State Excise Nitin Raut has found a unique way to ensure transparency and
keep tabs on the assets of officers in his department.

He has directed the secretary of the state excise department to give him details of the requests made by the deputy commissioners, superintendents, deputy superintendents and Group A officers for buying immovable and movable property in their names in the last three years.

The details must include particulars of registration, type of assets and the cost of the property.

The directive was passed last month and also seeks details of revenues and raids carried out by the department.

But excise officials say the move is aimed at gaining mileage before the Assembly elections in October. Raut disagrees.

"The government rules make it mandatory for officials to declare their assets.

There have been cases where officers have amassed illegal wealth by cheating the government.

The directive will ensure transparency and revenue for the government," he explained.
