The Shiv Sena's proposal of allowing rooftop restaurants in Mumbai is facing a roadblock from its ally the BJP. The proposal was tabled before BMC's Improvement Committee for their approval on Wednesday but the BJP and opposition parties once again stalled the issue.
Corporators from the BJP slammed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC's) new rooftop restaurant policy stating that it will “disturb the culture of a city like Mumbai.”
The proposal was rejected in the civic improvements committee meeting 11 votes to 10 with BJP and Congress corporators opposing it and Shiv Sena and Samajwadi Party corporators supporting it.
The policy, which was deferred by the committee last year in December and again on January 22 this year, came up for discussion again on Wednesday, when the BJP corporators termed it as a ‘nuisance’ for the residents.
'If the proposal gets approved, then the young generation of the city would start having late night parties on rooftops, drink liquor, play loud music, which will disrupt the peace of citizens,” said BJP corporator Ram Barot.
While the MNS has been demanding permission for all type of hotels to have rooftoop restaurants, the civic body has not consider the demand on the grounds that the new rider can not be added since this proposal is “different’ from regular proposal.
Interestingly, civic chief Sitaram Kunte had already given a nod for the proposal.
