Congress leader and social activist Shivajirao Girdhar Patil, father of late actress Smita Patil, breathed his last at a private hospital in Mumbai on Saturday. He was 92 years old. NCP chief Sharad Pawar visited Patil's Bandra residence to pay his respects.
Plunging into politics in his early teens, Patil has been an active member of several political parties like the Communist Party of India, Congress, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party. He has been a member of the Rajya Sabha (1992-98), was twice elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council (1960, ’66) and in 1967, was an MLA. Pic/Sayyed Sameer Abedi
