She also claimed that call records indicated multiple contacts linked to the accused. त्यांची देखील चौकशी departmental vigilance कडून झाली पाहिजे त्यांचे देखील थोडे थोडके… pic.twitter.com/FWq0dHHpdT — Mrs Anjali Damania (@anjali_damania) April 13, 2026 Damania urged Director General of Police Sadanand Date to seek clarification on the matter. There was no immediate response from Karale despite attempts to contact him. The Enforcement Directorate is also probing a suspected money laundering angle and has conducted searches at locations linked to the accused. Authorities are examining financial transactions and related entities as part of the broader investigation. Congress MP raises ‘encounter’ concern Separately, Congress MP Praniti Shinde stirred controversy by suggesting the possibility of an “encounter” killing of the accused. She claimed that as the investigation progresses, names of individuals linked to the ruling establishment in Maharashtra could emerge. BJP urges restraint, asks leaders to aid probe Reacting to the developments, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule called for restraint, urging political leaders to avoid making speculative statements. He said that individuals with information related to the case should cooperate with the Special Investigation Team rather than making public claims. Fresh claims over financial links and accounts In a separate statement, Damania also raised questions about alleged financial links involving Pratibha Chakankar, sister of former Maharashtra State Women’s Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar. She disputed claims regarding alleged fake accounts, citing call data records and communication exchanges over an extended period. Damania questioned how such interactions could be dismissed as fabricated. Police officials confirmed that Pratibha Chakankar was questioned in connection with alleged use of her bank account by Kharat. Authorities are examining accounts held in her name and that of her son in a cooperative credit society as part of the probe. Investigation continues amid political controversy The case has triggered a political storm in Maharashtra, with allegations, counter-allegations, and demands for accountability intensifying.
14 April,2026 09:06 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentIn a unique protest, three cab drivers walked nearly 150 kilometres from Pune to Mumbai to highlight the plight of app-based cab drivers and their grievances. Affiliated with the Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha, the trio said they were upset with the “injustice” meted out to them by app-based taxi companies. Starting from Pune on April 10, the three walked to Mumbai with four halts and reached the city border on Wednesday morning. The drivers, identified as Parmeshwar Ghonge, Santosh Durge, and Vaibhav Bhegde, all in their 40s, crossed Andheri and reached near the international airport in the evening. They are scheduled to reach Mumbai's Azad Maidan on Thursday to submit a petition to the authorities. What is the protest about? The protest has been undertaken to draw the administration’s attention to the claim that app-based companies are operating illegally across the state, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among drivers. Arbitrary rates: Drivers alleged that app-based companies are displaying arbitrary fares, ignoring Transport Department orders, and continuing bike-taxi services in cities like Mumbai and Nagpur despite FIRs and lack of valid licences, causing discontent among drivers and passengers. Fees from drivers: They also raised concerns over repeated deductions from drivers under the guise of “panic button” charges, lack of transparency in commissions, and non-compliance with government-approved rates. Government-notified rates: In Maharashtra (Mumbai Metropolitan Region), app-based cabs such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido are required to follow government-notified fare structures aimed at balancing passenger affordability and driver earnings. However, companies have reportedly been ignoring these norms, citing surge pricing and other factors. Trade union support Dr Keshav Nana Kshirsagar, president of Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha, said the march has been called a “padayatra for justice.” He said the protest aims to highlight the injustice faced by cab drivers and the arbitrary practices of app-based companies. “These cab drivers will reach Azad Maidan in Mumbai on April 15 at 4 pm, after which they will meet transport officials and submit their representation,” he said. Officials’ response A transport official said, “We have repeatedly asked companies to follow government rates on their applications. Companies are blaming each other for not complying with orders. We are continuously following up on the issue.” Voices from the protest Santosh Durge, cab driver from Pune, says, “Our legs ached, and the sun drained us out. But the fight must go on. Government rates are not reflected in the apps, leading to conflicts between drivers and commuters. App companies are not following norms, and we are bearing the brunt. Bike taxis are also operating illegally and have dented our business.” Parmeshwar Ghonge, a cab driver from Pune, says, “We fell ill on the way and faced several medical issues, but our determination kept us going. We received timely medical support. We plan to submit our petition to the transport minister and the chief minister. It is unfair that despite government notifications, rules are not being followed.” Vaibhav Bhegde, cab driver from Pune, says, “We suffered blisters and injuries due to the long walk, but our determination remained strong. We represent the app-based cab community, and this protest is to draw government attention. Many drivers and supporters joined us along the way.” Route and details Route taken: Pune RTO, Talegaon, Khopoli, Panvel, Kamothe, Sanpada, Vashi, Andheri, Airport, Azad MaidanTotal distance: 150 km

14 April,2026 07:20 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe Congress on Tuesday strongly criticised the BJP-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra following the deaths of two students due to suspected drug overdose, calling the administration “inept and shameless” and accusing it of failing to curb the growing drug problem among youth. The remarks were made by Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal, who alleged that the state’s governance failures have allowed drug abuse to spread unchecked. Two students die after suspected overdose at Goregaon event According to the police, the incident occurred on Sunday after a music concert held in Goregaon, Mumbai. The deceased were students of a city-based management institute and were part of a group of around 15 individuals. Preliminary information suggests that the group had consumed ecstasy before entering the venue and also consumed alcohol during the event. The deaths have raised concerns over the availability and use of narcotic substances at large public gatherings. Congress questions law enforcement and event oversight Sapkal questioned how such a large gathering, where drugs and alcohol were allegedly consumed openly, went undetected by authorities. He said the incident pointed to a major lapse by the Mumbai Police and the state’s Home Department, adding that it reflected poorly on the administrative machinery responsible for maintaining law and order. The Congress leader also demanded clarity on permissions granted for the event at the NESCO complex in Goregaon, raising concerns about regulatory oversight. Allegations of political patronage and weak enforcement In his statement, Sapkal alleged that the drug trade is flourishing across Maharashtra with the “blessings of those in power.” He cited past cases in cities such as Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Solapur to support his claims. He further alleged that investigations in drug-related cases were often diluted and that accused individuals were given undue relief, suggesting possible political interference. Fadnavis targeted over Home portfolio Sapkal also targeted Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who currently holds the Home portfolio, accusing him of failing to control the situation. “If he cannot handle the Home Department, he is unfit to run the state,” Sapkal said, demanding accountability from the government over the incident. Opposition calls for probe into incident Meanwhile, Supriya Sule termed the incident “extremely worrisome” and called for a thorough police inquiry. She urged the Home Department to take immediate action and ensure that those responsible are held accountable, while also stressing the need for stronger measures to prevent such incidents in the future. After securing permission, officials produced the accused before the court via video-conferencing on Tuesday. Public prosecutor Shailendra Bagde argued that further custodial interrogation was necessary to uncover details related to the allegations. He told the court that the accused had allegedly administered sedatives to the complainant before sexually assaulting her, reported PTI. Investigators maintained that additional questioning could help establish the sequence of events and gather crucial evidence in the case. Defence opposes remand, cites prolonged custody Kharat’s counsel, Satish Bhate, opposed the SIT’s plea, arguing that the accused had already been in police custody for a considerable period. He contended that since the SIT had been investigating the matter, further remand was not required, reported PTI. The defence urged the court to deny additional custody, stating that continued detention was unnecessary at this stage of the investigation. Court grants custody considering seriousness of charges After hearing both sides, the court granted the SIT’s request, citing the serious and sensitive nature of the allegations. 14 April,2026 05:51 PM IST | Nashik | mid-day online correspondentThe Maharashtra unit of the Congress on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora over his remarks regarding party representation at the funeral of legendary singer Asha Bhosle, reported PTI. The controversy erupted after Deora, a former Congress leader and Union minister, suggested in a social media post that one political party had failed to send senior representatives to the funeral, indirectly targeting his former party. Deora’s post triggers political row In his post, Deora described the funeral as a gathering marked by “love, song, and gratitude,” attended by leaders from across political parties. However, he noted that “one exception stood out,” which he said reflected a disconnect from the country’s cultural ethos. Congress counters claim, lists leaders who attended Rejecting Deora’s allegation, the Congress asserted that several of its senior leaders were present to pay their respects. The party named leaders including Sushilkumar Shinde, Naseem Khan, and Lok Sabha MP Praniti Shinde, among others, who attended the funeral, reported PTI. The party said their presence reflected both cultural respect and longstanding values, countering Deora’s claim of absence, reported PTI. Sharp criticism over ‘ingratitude’ and political shift In a strongly worded statement, the Congress accused Deora of “ingratitude” and “political opportunism,” pointing to his long association with the party before joining the faction led by Eknath Shinde, reported PTI. The party alleged that Deora was attempting to discredit his former political base in a bid to demonstrate loyalty to his current leadership. It further claimed that the Congress had played a key role in shaping the political career and identity of the Deora family, reported PTI. War of words escalates on social media The exchange quickly escalated on social media, with the Congress using unusually sharp language to criticise Deora’s remarks. It accused him of spreading misinformation and questioned his motives behind targeting the party. The statement also suggested that his comments were an attempt to gain political favour within his current party setup, rather than a reflection of facts. Political tensions intensify in Maharashtra The episode highlights growing tensions between the Congress and leaders who have switched sides in recent years, particularly in Maharashtra’s evolving political landscape.
