A 28-year-old man was arrested by the Malwani police late on Wednesday night for allegedly raping a 19-year-old beautician at knifepoint on Sunday. The survivor, who works at a well-known mall, was living in a rented flat and the accused is a relative of the flat owner.

Harishchandra Gautam, an electrician and a resident of Malwani, used to go to the survivor’s flat to collect rent every month. According to officials from the Malwani police, the survivor was alone at home on October 5, as her father had gone to meet a relative. Gautam, who had gone to collect rent, forcibly entered the house and allegedly raped the beautician at knifepoint. He threatened to kill her if she spoke about the incident.

The survivor was in shock and told her father about the incident only on Wednesday. He registered a complaint with the Malwani police station and Gautam was arrested the same day. “We produced the accused in court today (Thursday) and has been remanded in police custody till Saturday,” said an official from the Malwani police station.
