Temple fun
The Sun Temple in Konark (in pic) was trending high on Twitter yesterday. Thanks to our Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historical reading of the statues.

Currently on a tour of the US, he had said yesterday, according to the wire agency ANI, that there are figurines in the Konark sun temple in Odisha, which according to him are 2000 years-old, wearing modern skirts and carrying purses.

And he has concluded that skirts and purses may have existed at that time. The first painful information to emerge was that the temple was built in the 13th century and then there was this wisecrack on twitter, “a historian informed that it was a mall earlier, ladies would come here for shopping and selfies.”

Work is on in full swing for a book on this centerpiece that was once a common feature in our homes, and outside courts, post offices and government offices. It’s slated for a late 2016 release. We will keep us posted when it’s ready. Who knows, they might attempt to have it type-written for that extra brush of nostalgia!
Music trio readies to kick some butt
When music and a message come together in harmony, it always means melody that is sweeter than ever to the ears. The Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) will hold the Shankar Ehsaan Loy Indian musical trio concert, ‘Music for a cause’ on June 12 at the Birla Matoshri Sabhagriha, Marine Lines.

There will be a message in the music, ‘celebrate life and don’t let it go up in smoke.’ Musical trio Shankar Ehsaan Loy say, “It is our third year of performance with CPAA and we are always happy to be associated with such causes and make a difference in the society.” For YK Sapru, founder-chairman, CEO of the CPAA, it is time to push the theme, ‘get ready for plain packaging.’
Plain packaging reduces the attractiveness of tobacco products, restricts use of tobacco packaging as a form of advertising, limits misleading packaging and labelling. You go, plain Janes!

Sculpture high in Ambarnath
Sculptures in Ambarnath have intrigued us. And now, we hear, that later this month, a talk by researcher Dr Kumud Kanitkar will be held at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahalaya to throw light on these fascinating sculptures.
Dr Kanitkar has also written a book on the region, titled, Ambernath Shivalaya. Incidentally, the Shivalaya sculptures were meant to be a means of non-verbal mass communication when they were built. Don’t miss this one, for a crash course in history right here in the city’s backyard.

Whether this was just another example of ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ or true sentiment over the loss of boxing’s most famous face, we’re not saying.
