Mumbai Diary: Wednesday Dossier

Sir Jeffrey Archer and Jeff KinneySir Jeffrey Archer and Jeff Kinney

The Jeffs will be in town
The literature festival season has kicked off, and it’s raining authors. This Thursday, 76-year-old Sir Jeffrey Archer will be in town to meet with his fans at the release of his latest thriller, This Was a Man.

The bestselling author has been touring the country, speaking at colleges and schools, taking selfies, doing Facebook live chats and even finding time to sign books at the airport before taking off to the next destination. It appears people really are keen on knowing how the Clifton Chronicles end.

In early December, The Penguin Annual Lecture in Delhi and Mumbai will see the lecture delivered by Jeff Kinney. The much-loved creator of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series will be talking about his famous character. Incidentally, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down, the eleventh book in series, released on November 1. We wonder who will be coming down next.

I’ve got you, girl

Still not quite there, are we?
Even though an increasing number of fathers are getting equally involved in caring for their baby, a survey reveals that not too many of them believe that it is their responsibility.

The survey was conducted by Pampers in association with AC Nielsen in top metros to understand parenting behaviour and fathers’ involvement in the overall development of the babies.

Of the 432 parents spoken to as part of the survey, 97 per cent mothers believe that it takes both parents to raise a happy, healthy baby, and yet 90 per cent moms also feel that their husbands need to be more involved in childcare.

Not surprisingly then, 88 per cent fathers believe that baby chores primarily only need the mother’s involvement, and it is the same percentage of men who hesitate to change diapers. Clearly, we have a long way to go.

Yeh shaam, Sonam ke naam
Evening Shadows (Surmaee Shaam), a film about a gay son coming out to his family in rural India, directed by Mumbai’s Sridhar Ranagayan, has Sonam Kapoor’s support.

The actress recently tweeted, “Let your family be your biggest strength, not an entity you fight against,” urging her followers to contribute to the crowd-funded film.

Ranagayan had told this paper how demonetisation had hit the flow of funds, as the gay community prefers the anonymity of cash, instead of traceable plastic money. But things seem to be on track, with over 80 per cent of the funding complete.

Crack(er) the whip
Bravado some called it, while others used the more prosaic, it is just a beginning. The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) decided to ride out the tough times (pun intended) opening the Mumbai season last Sunday, after some trepidation about whether people would bet in these days of demonetisation.

Gambling, after all, is done in cash. Now the club, taking heart from the attendance last weekend, has decided to roll out a mega event on November 26 and 27. A Stylecracker fashion fest is on, and there will be at least 100 stalls with fashion, food, music and a kid zone.

At the curtain raiser, RWITC had stated that the brand was a trifle iffy about going on with the fashion fest. Yet, they decided to go with it. After all, isn’t life a gamble?

Underwater kick
Who says scuba diving is possible only in exotic islands? In fact, going by the theme of an unusual underwater festival, it could even happen in the land-locked city of Pune. Finkick Adventures, a travel group that works towards opening up the world of scuba diving to as many people as possible, is organising the festival in Pune this Sunday.

With activities such as an underwater obstacle course, underwater hockey, etc, being open to anyone over the age of 10, one needn’t even be a swimmer for some of the diving games. The larger aim being to promote love for the ocean, there will also be an exhibition of professional photographs at the event, capturing marine life in all its beauty.
