A 35-year-old housewife from Badlapur was arrested for allegedly strangling her eight-year-old son to death, the police said on Friday. His sister informed the police about the incident after which the mother taken into police custody.
The mother, identified as Sheetal Maner, strangled her son Arnav while he was asleep on early hours of Thursday morning. According to the police, she was staying at her sister’s house at the time of the incident. Maner, shocked by her act, then informed her sister, who was was at her in-laws' house.
Her sister told police that she was disturbed after her husband left her due to some problems in between them. She added that Maner was disturbed for a year but no one thought that she would take such a step. Her all family members who were staying at Vikhroli immediately came to support her but they did not imagine that she can kill her son.
Arnav was studying in an English-medium school in Badlapur. Maner was finding it difficult to pay his school fees as she was unemployed. According to the police, she was in a state of shock when she realised that her son has died. She has an impending divorce case in Ulhasnagar court.
SPI DV Deshmukh said, "The woman’s family said that she was mentally disturbed and on medication for the same from past few months. We are checking his background and details about her medication." He added that Maner has been charged of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
