BMC to provide free beds, medical aid to all those who get injured while participating in the festivities

Withu00a0the civic body elections just around the corner, political parties are preparing to cash in on the dahi handi in a bigger, and more innovative way than ever before. While the BJP has stuck to providing insurance and humongous sums of prize money and the MNS has introduced the concept of safety harnesses, the BMC led by the Shiv Sena, not wanting to be left behind has jumped into the fray by providing medical treatment to all injured govindas free of cost.

Balancing Act: Last year, medical aid was provided to the injured
govindas with
bills less than Rs 10,000, but this year, treatment will be
provided free of cost

Today, the scores of govindas in the city can breathe easy as the civic body has decided to treat anyone who gets injured during the dangerous competition.u00a0 Last year, medical aid was provided to all those whose bills had tallied up to less than Rs 10,000, but this year, aid will be provided completely free of cost.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Health) Manisha Mhaiskar confirmed the same adding that beds would be put up at all major hospitals in the city with instructions to provide injured govindas with free treatment. The decision was taken following the request made by BMC's standing committee chairperson and Sena corporator Rahul Shewale.

Speaking to MiD DAY, he said, "We looked at last year's figures and found that very few people required treatment that cost over Rs 10,000. Hence, the benefits will be provided to all."

Magic of nine
Meanwhile, the MNS has decided to award Rs 99,999.99 for the dahi handi. Explaining the number of nines in the figure, Chetan Pednekar, Vice-President of the MNS (students' wing), said, "We took the decision to have the entire prize money in nines because it is Raj Thackeray's favourite number. Additionally, we also sold onions and sugar at Rs 9 per kg." On the other hand Ram Kadam, an MLA from the MNS, is offering a whopping Rs 1 crore as prize money. And not wanting to be left behind, the BJP-organised Dahi handis will have banners of Anna Hazare as a token of support to the anti-graft crusader. 170 Number of govindas who were injured last year
