Thanekars don’t be surprised to see Thane Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal accompanied with five bouncers as security from March 1.

For security reasons, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has decided to appoint private bouncers for the TMC commissioner. The Thane civic body which will be paying for the security guards has sanctioned monthly expenses of Rs 2.92 lakh for the bouncers.

The issue of security is a sore issue for the Municipal Commissioner with last week seeing a RTI activist attacking Deputy Municipal Commissioner and Public relation officer of TMC, Sandeep Malvi.

Subhash Thombre, 49, the accused, who claimed to be a Shiv Sena leader and a social activist, was subsequently arrested.

The incident took place when additional municipal commissioner Ashok Rankhamb and DMC Sandeep Malvi were hearing Thombre regarding a right to information isssue. Thombre allegedly lost his cool during the hearing and started absuding Malvi before assaulting him, the complaint said.

On January 18, a Hindu Sena activist blackened Jaiswal's nameplate at the TMC headquarters to protest demolition of a temple at Pokharan Road No1.

The incident which allegedly took place in the presence of more than 50 policemen and TMC security guards left Jaiswal reportedly very upset.

“After nameplate incident we have decided on bouncers. Now, the Commissioner has started a road widening project, many structures have been removed, so there is need for security. In December 2015, the Commissioner was busy with projects on Ghodbunder Road, one person approached him directly and started abusing him. Such incidents have increased so we have decided to go for private protection,” said a senior TMC officer who was processing the process.

“We have called for tenders the third time and finally got a response. Five bouncers (security guards) will be appointed during office time on a 11-month agreement. And TMC will pay Rs 2.92 lakh per month for five private security guards. New guards may join duty from March 1,” said the officer on condition of anonymity.

Last week in a general body meeting, corporators also raised the issue of poor security at TMC headquarters. Shiv Sena Corporator Ashok Vaity has suggested deploying security guards for officers also.
