Medical aspirants across the state will now have to spend more tuition fees and toil harder in order to clear the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical colleges.
The easier alternative is the state-level MHT-CET medical entrance conducted by the Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education (MSBSHSE), but not anymore.
Things are all set to change as a recent directive sent by the centre has scrapped the MHT-CET exam, with effect from 2012. Parents now claim that since the NEET is far more challenging and difficult than the scrapped exam, private tuitions is an inevitability.u00a0 The hike in fees for coaching classes for the new exam will also add to their woes.
A parent from the central suburbs, said, "My son is from state board and I am worried that he will not be able to cope with the syllabus for the NEET. The private classes have started hiking their fees, as they know that more and more students will have to enroll, if they want to clear the difficult exam."u00a0 Another parent said "NEET is based on the CBSE pattern of study. This will increase the stress of students."
Narendra Bhambwani, vice president, Maharashtra Coaching Classes Owners Association, said, "The NEET is based on the CBSE syllabus. The coaching classes will thus have to give more attention to the state board students, who are unacquainted with the nitty- gritties of the CBSE syllabus."
Meanwhile, an official from the Directorate of Medical Education and Research confirmed that the state education department has been allowed to challenge the decision at the Supreme Court.
