Bandra ALM has taken the BMC's help to erect waist-high metal poles on footpaths to prevent two wheelers from riding on them to bypass traffic jams

The footpaths on St Andrews Road in Bandra have just got safer for pedestrians thanks to the combined effort of residents and BMC officials. To prevent bikers and two wheelers from climbing on to the footpath during traffic jams, Bandra ALM members asked BMC officials to erect pollards, waist-high metal poles, at the beginning and end of every section of the footpath.

Assistant Engineer Roads Department of H West Ward, N Sakpal said, "The central agency of the BMC's department has carried out the work to prevent bikers from riding and two wheelers from parking their vehicles on footpaths."

The pollards have been installed only on those footpaths specified by the residents. Corporator Asif Zakaria said, "The local ALM discussed the issue with me. I put forward their proposal and the Roads Department carried it out."

Sub Engineer Mahesh Asudhani, who supervised the work said, "The residents asked for the pollards since St Andrew's sees heavy traffic and two wheelers often ride on the pavements. This causes inconvenience to the pedestrians."

Each pollard cost Rs 5,100, said Asudhani. "South Mumbai has broader footpaths with a three or five metre width, while the suburbs have narrow ones. It would be a waste to fit them on narrow pavements, though the suburbs face more traffic."
