There's some good news for students with Maharashtra education minister Vinod Tawde stating that he will try to reduce the weight of school bags by 2016.
An impromptu decision to check the weight of school bags brought state education minister Vinod Tawde to three schools in Mumbai's Vile Parle suburb. Not only did the minister randomly check the weight of school bags but also weighed students who were carrying the bags. The experiment showed that students, on an average, carry about 4.5 to 6 kilos on their backs everyday to school.

“The weight of school bags are getting heavier with every passing day and it differs from one education board to another. I will be recommending some measures to the state board committee currently working on reducing the weight of school bags. By 2016, school bags will be lighter,” said Tawde.
