Taps will run dry in Tardeo and Lower Parel area again after yesterday, as the BMC has taken up the job of diverting main pipelines to facilitate its storm water drain project in Mumbai Central. As such, residents of the region have to brace for another water cut on May 6-7. The first cut began on Monday and lasted until 4 am today.

Anticipating the shortage, some residing in the area have begun storing water already, even as others had no idea about the cut yesterday. Amol Ghadi (28), a resident on Tardeo, said, "When I got up yesterday there wasn't any water at all."

A Delise Road resident, Pushpa Kadam (49), said, "Luckily, we had stored water. Also, we have bought a water tank of 1,000 litres for such days." The water cut is supposed to isolate Tansa (E) and Tansa (W) main pipelines to divert the Tansa West main pipeline feeder to Vasant Dada Patil Udyan, to accommodate the storm drain. BMC's deputy hydraulic engineer S Maheswari said, "The proposed storm water drain work would begin, for which we need to lift the mains, so the drainage can be built under them."

He added that the work is would finish on time, hopefully before rains strike the city. Deputy Chief Engineer S Railkar said, "The work is scheduled get done before monsoon. The storm water drain is important as Mumbai Central is a low-lying area which gets flooded during rains. The water would be sent to Haji Ali pumping station."

The cut will now begin from 7 am on May 6 until 3 am on May 7. It was proposed to be implemented on April 29 and May 3. But the BMC's hydraulic department didn't want to disrupt Maharashtra Day celebrations, so it postponed it.

Affected areas
The areas that are to be affected are Tardeo and MP Mills Compound, Senapati Bapat Marg, Ganpatrao Kadam Marg, Sayani Road, Prabhadevi, Janata Colony, Fitwala Rasta, Elphinstone Road, Delisle Road and BDD Chawl.
