Maharashtra School Education Minister Dada Bhuse on Wednesday said there were 420 unauthorised schools in Mumbai, of which 47 have been shut down, reported the PTI.
In a written reply to a query asked by Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Bhaskar Jadhav and others in the Lower House of the state legislature, he said 103 of these 420 schools have been penalised and 126 others were facing criminal cases.
Dada Bhuse said that 1,057 aided and non-aided schools have been started in Mumbai with due permission, according to the PTI.
Out of these 1,057 schools, 218 did not apply for renewal of their permission in 2022. Of these 218 schools, 211 have been granted permission under the Right to Education (RTE) and seven schools have been shut down, he added.
In a written reply to a question posed by Sneha Dube Pandit of the BJP, Bhuse said the process of setting up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the illegal inclusion of names as teaching and non-teaching staff in the school education department dashboard was underway, the news agency reported.
Aaditya Thackeray alleges irregularities in Worli slum redevelopment project
Meanwhile, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray on Wednesday alleged "irregularities" in a prominent slum redevelopment project in Worli and demanded corrective action by the Maharashtra government, as per the PTI.
The proposed redevelopment of Subhedar Ramji Ambedkar Nagar couldn't take off earlier as several developers have withdrawn over the last 15 years.
The project was mired in controversy with allegations ranging from issues with land allotment, missing documents, and potential financial losses to the state exchequer.
With construction commencing recently, Thackeray raised the matter in the legislative assembly, claiming several discrepancies have emerged, including non-payment of rent to project-affected residents for the past six months.
"The original layout plan shown to slum dwellers was altered without proper intimation or approvals. Construction of saleable flats and even bungalows has begun without completing the rehabilitation buildings," he said, according to the PTI.
The former Maharashtra minister also claimed that around 70 per cent of the land in the project is yet to be handed over to the government and demanded clarification of the status of government-owned land in the project.
Aaditya Thackeray demanded immediate disbursal of the pending rent to affected residents.
He said the construction should follow the original approved plan, with commercial shops at the front and saleable flats at the rear.
Aaditya Thackeray appealed to the Speaker and the state government to initiate appropriate action.
