The death toll in a fire incident reported in Andheri East earlier this month has risen to one, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in an official update on December 28.
The fire had broken out on December 21 at Vijay Nagar in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar Chawl, Andheri East. According to the BMC’s Mumbai Fire Brigade, the blaze was reported at around 7.16 am on December 21 in Room No. 10 on the first floor of a ground-plus-one chawl-like structure.
Fire officials said the blaze was confined to electrical wiring and installations, along with household items such as clothes and mattresses. The fire was brought under control by 7.44 am on the same day.
However, the BMC on Sunday (December 28) said that one of the injured victims, Veena Pradip Bhoite, succumbed to her injuries three days later. As per information received from the Chief Medical Officer of Kasturba Hospital, she was declared dead on December 24 at 10.03 pm.
Two other injured persons — Namdeo Sakpal and Laxmi Sakpal — remain admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and are on oxygen support. Their condition continues to be critical, officials said.
Further investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
Fire breaks out at commercial building in Santacruz East
Meanwhile, A fire broke out at a commercial building in the Kalina area of Santacruz East during the early hours of Sunday, civic officials said. The incident was reported to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) at around 2.37 am.
According to officials, the fire occurred at Emgeen Chambers, situated opposite Bharat Bank on CST Road. The blaze was confined to a closed office on the sixth floor of the basement-plus-ground-plus-six-storey glass facade commercial building.
The fire affected electrical wiring and installations, office files and records, wooden furniture, computers, doors, windows, chairs, glass facade elements, and the false ceiling in an area measuring approximately 60 feet by 60 feet.
After receiving the alert, multiple firefighting and emergency response units were mobilised, including an Assistant Divisional Fire Officer, senior station officers, several fire engines and jumbo tankers, an aerial water tower tender, a hydraulic platform, a quick response vehicle, a breathing apparatus van, and a 108 ambulance. Personnel from the police, the concerned electricity distribution company, and BMC ward staff were also present at the site.
Firefighters succeeded in bringing the blaze under control and fully extinguishing it by 4.14 am, officials confirmed.
No injuries were reported in the incident. Authorities are continuing to assess the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
