Mumbai on Thursday registered more than 1,500 new novel Coronavirus cases, for the second consecutive day. With 20,000 COVID-19 tests conducted in a day, the test positivity rate (TR) increased to 7.4 per cent. State’s total tally crossed 22.6 lakh with health department officials confirming 14,317 fresh infections, up from 13,659 on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the city reported 1,508 cases, slightly lower than Wednesday’s 1,558. Tests, too, comparatively lower — down to 20,401 on Thursday from 21,615 a day before. With hospitals discharging 911 more patients, the city now has about 12,000 active cases.
The BMC said that 90 per cent of new cases are being reported from residential buildings, and the number of containment zones (CZ) has increased to 27 from 12 within a week. The maximum number of CZs are in S ward comprising Bhandup, followed by K East ward consisting of Jogeshwari, Andheri and Vile Parle.
Sealed buildings up to 228
Across the city, one or more floors of 2,815 buildings that reported up to four cases are sealed. The number of buildings sealed completely for reporting more than five cases increased to 228. A week back, only 127 buildings had been sealed.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) reported 2,856 cases, including the ones in Mumbai. Other cities like Thane recorded 293 cases, Navi Mumbai 194 and Kalyan-Dombivli 270. The MMR saw seven deaths, excluding Mumbai’s tally. Pune recorded 12 deaths, Aurangabad and Nagpur registered 9 deaths each.
Out of the state’s 14,317 fresh cases, Akola circle reported 1,625, Pune Circle 3,088, Nashik 2,436 and Nagpur 2,637. The state’s recovery rate has dropped below 93 per cent. A total of 7,193 patients were discharged across Maharashtra on Thursday, and the number of active cases increased to 1,06,070. The state had around 30,000 active cases in the first week of February.
