DELHI’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Friday faced technical issues leading to flight delays. Around 60 flights fly out of Mumbai to Delhi directly daily, but sources at the Mumbai airport told mid-day that there haven’t been any prolonged delays of flights that are flying directly to Delhi from here.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) said flight operations at the Delhi airport faced delays due to a technical issue in the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), which supports air traffic control data.
“Due to technical issues with the Air Traffic Control [ATC] system, flight operations at IGIA are experiencing delays. Their team is actively working with all stakeholders, including DIAL, to resolve it at the earliest,” said the airport's authority.
Following this, multiple airlines, including Air India, Air India Express, Indigo, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet, put out advisories, telling their passengers to check the status of their flights to make sure no inconvenience is caused to the travellers.
The AMSS is a computerised system that handles high-volume exchange of operationally important messages, such as flight plans, schedule information, and weather data. In cases of failure or technical issues with the AMSS system, the ATC controllers opt to process the data manually, which could cause delays.
“Controllers are processing flight plans manually, leading to some delays,” read the AAI’s statement on their X handle.
The affected operations have mainly been limited to the Delhi airport, while only some minor delays were faced by other airports. While the technical issues have not been solved as of Friday evening, the problem is expected to be solved soon.
The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), the country's busiest airport, handles more than 1500 flight movements daily.
