Virar-Dahanu rail project almost half complete; work on key bridges speeds up

The key project of Virar-Dahanu rail quadrupling, which promises to boost Western Railway's Mumbai train services in a major way, has now completed 47 per cent physical progress. It promises to segregate suburban and outstation trains and allow for seamless travel. Announcing the update, Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) on Tuesday said all major statutory approvals, including land acquisition, environmental clearances, and forest clearances, have been obtained. The project has a sanctioned cost of Rs 3,578 crore. Physical progress has reached 47 per cent. “Entire private land, government land, and forest land required for the project have been acquired, and work has commenced in all sections, including forest and mangrove areas. Major construction activities such as earthwork, bridge construction, station redevelopment, and utility buildings are in full progress. Over 88 per cent of earthwork has been completed, and more than 50 bridges and road underbridges have already been constructed. Important Bridges No. 92 and 93, which are critical structures on this corridor, are advancing steadily with piling, substructure, and superstructure works underway,” MRVC chief PRO Sunil Udasi told mid-day. Station redevelopment progress “Station redevelopment works are progressing across key stations including Virar, Vaitarna, Saphale, Kelve Road, Palghar, Umroli, Boisar, Vangaon, and Dahanu Road. New station buildings, platforms, foot overbridges, staff quarters, signalling buildings, and passenger amenities are at various stages of completion, with several facilities already handed over for operational use,” he added. At Virar station, major remodelling works are in progress, including widening of Platform 3A, construction of elevated decks, and reconfiguration of platforms to support future Churchgate-Dahanu suburban services. Overall, the project is progressing in a planned manner with coordinated execution across civil, electrical, signalling, and track works, while ensuring safety and minimal disruption to existing train operations. Two key bridges near Vaitarna Construction of two crucial railway bridges on the Virar-Dahanu Road quadrupling project is progressing steadily near Vaitarna on the Western Railway corridor, officials said. The project, being executed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), is aimed at enhancing suburban train capacity and improving service reliability on the northern stretch of WR Mumbai. Two key bridges — Bridge No. 92 and Bridge No. 93 — form critical links in the corridor and will carry additional suburban tracks once completed. At Bridge No. 92, most of the foundation and pillar work has been completed, with girder and deck slab casting and launching currently underway in stages. “Protection works, including toe wall piling, are also progressing, indicating that the bridge is nearing completion of its main structural components. Work on Bridge No. 93 is also advancing, with piling activity in progress at multiple locations. More than three-quarters of the total piling work has already been completed, while pier, pier cap and girder construction is being carried out in a phased manner,” Udasi said. Earthwork and stability measures “Earthwork and embankment preparation at the bridge approaches are continuing alongside the structural works. Due to challenging soil conditions and proximity to water bodies, it requires special construction methods at the site. So far, over 5.6 lakh cubic metres of earthwork has been completed, along with ground-strengthening measures to ensure long-term track stability. Work is progressing in both island and non-island areas despite difficult terrain,” he said. Once commissioned, the additional lines enabled by these bridges are expected to allow more suburban services between Virar and Dahanu Road, easing congestion and improving passenger comfort. Authorities said construction is being carried out in coordination with multiple agencies, while ensuring safety and minimal disruption to existing train operations. Project outlook “The Virar-Dahanu Road quadrupling project is progressing steadily, with nearly half of the physical work already completed. This project will significantly enhance suburban rail capacity beyond Virar. MRVC is executing the works with a strong focus on safety, quality, and minimal disruption to ongoing train operations,” Udasi added.

ZP elections: Congress begins campaign in Raigad; Sapkal calls for victory

Ahead of the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections 2026, Congress on Tuesday began its campaign in Maharashtra's Raigad district, calling for victory in the upcoming local polls. Maharashtra Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal hit the campaign trail across Raigad district, warning that industrialists were encroaching on the rights of the “sons of the soil” and urging voters to support Congress MVA candidates in the Zilla Parishad polls. Speaking at rallies in Jasai, Chirner, Satirje, and Chondhi, Sapkal said the enthusiasm among party workers showed victory was within reach. “The Zilla Parishad election is about safeguarding local rights and traditions. Congress MVA is set to perform strongly in Raigad, and power will be in our hands,” he said. Sapkal cited public leader D. B. Patil’s historical fight for local communities and said the region now faced fresh challenges from “capitalist interests.” He appealed to voters to unite and ensure a Congress MVA win to block these forces. On the issue of the Navi Mumbai airport, Sapkal reiterated Congress’s long-standing demand to name it after D. B. Patil. “Devendra Fadnavis is avoiding this. The airport currently shows the NM (Navi Mumbai) name, but any attempt to rename it after Narendra Modi will not be accepted,” he said. Raigad District Congress Committee President Mahendra Gharat, Rajabhau Thakur, and other senior party leaders accompanied Sapkal during the campaign. Rane warns of fund cut if Sena (UBT) candidates win in ZP polls Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane has triggered a major controversy after warning that development funds would be withheld in areas where candidates of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) emerge victorious in the upcoming Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections. Addressing an election rally in the Fonda constituency of Kankavli in Sindhudurg district on Sunday, Rane said the release of funds depended on the poll symbol of the winning candidate. “If I see the lotus or the bow and arrow, funds are sanctioned immediately. But if the flaming torch appears, I will even stop funds that have already been approved,” he said, referring to the symbols of the BJP, Shiv Sena and Sena (UBT), respectively. Rane, who was campaigning for a Shiv Sena candidate, claimed a similar strategy had been adopted during recent gram panchayat elections. He alleged that sarpanches were warned that no funds would be released unless they aligned with the ruling side, following which they “quickly switched over”. The remarks drew sharp reactions from the Opposition. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Akhil Chitre said the state treasury was public money and not a personal reserve of any minister. He described Rane’s comments as an open admission of misuse of power and said they violated the oath of impartiality taken by a minister.

MNS will not ally with BJP in Mumbai mayor poll: Raj Thackeray to party workers Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray has stated that the party will have no alliance with the BJP in the mayor election of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a senior party leader said on Monday. The announcement came during a meeting with MNS functionaries to review the results of the civic polls held on January 15, mainly in Mumbai and its satellite cities. During the meeting, MNS workers raised concerns about lack of cooperation from their ally, Shiv Sena (UBT), in some civic wards. They also expressed displeasure over being allotted “unwinnable” wards in Mumbai as part of the alliance with the Shiv Sena (UBT) led by former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. MNS functionaries said the party was given difficult wards in Mumbai, which has 227 seats, making it hard for them to win more seats. According to the MNS leader, Raj Thackeray asked party workers not to dwell on the past but to focus on strengthening the organisation. “Raj saheb has said there will be no truck with the BJP in the mayoral poll of the BMC,” the leader added. MNS performance in BMC polls The MNS contested 53 seats in the BMC elections but won only six seats in India’s largest and wealthiest civic body. The BJP won 89 seats, becoming the single largest party in the BMC for the first time. Its ally, Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, secured 29 seats, while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) won 65 seats. The BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde) alliance has 118 seats, crossing the majority mark of 114, which could allow them to elect their candidate as mayor easily. The date for the mayoral election has not yet been announced.
