A container truck transporting biscuits overturned on the Nashik-Mumbai Highway in Maharashtra’s Thane district during the early hours of Tuesday affected traffic movement, civic officials said, reported the PTI.

No injuries were reported in the incident, they said.

According to the PTI, the accident took place at around 4 am near Kharegaon Toll Plaza in Kalwa.

Yasin Tadvi, chief of the disaster management cell said that the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a bend, causing the lorry to topple onto its side.

The vehicle was travelling towards Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai and was carrying approximately 20 tonnes of biscuits at the time of the accident.

Diesel leak

Officials said the lorry’s diesel tank developed a leak following the crash, leading to fuel spilling onto the road. Emergency teams promptly took precautionary measures to prevent any fire hazard or further incident, as per the PTI.

Traffic restored after clearance

The damaged vehicle was later removed with the assistance of a crane. Authorities cleared the highway for traffic after ensuring the area was safe.

Further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
